Ratings Shmatings (or so I tell myself)

I am conflicted.... Part of me is saying, \"It\'s all about the painting, ratings mean nothing. Just do your thing and if your work is strong it will shine, and if not then just improve.\" Another part of me is saying, \"I have no idea why that POS mini that\'s base coated, with barely any shading has a 7.8. Aughghg” I suppose the fact that it\'s a competition doesn\'t help either. I have no problem losing to a miniature that\'s amazing.

Anyways.... I\'m frustrated because I\'m losing to what I think is a \"low quality\" mini. And then I\'m also frustrated at the fact that I\'m frustrated because I should know better. In the end, I\'m doubly frustrated.

hehe...so have the ratings ticked anyone else off before?

Any words of wisdom to help?

Just post the minis in the forums, and not for ratings. You\'ll get advice and comments without the frustration of \'the system\'.

just remember there is alot of luck involved.... I know that sounds crazy, but if you get a group of haters to look at your mini first, then it will be voted low, and on another day it would get a better rating.
I have tested this many times by posting a mini, then deleting it and reposting it another day a week or so later. Really it makes me feel better to know that one week i get a 6.6 and the next its a 7.4. It helps me to not let the scoring get to me.
Also comments and forum talk is much more helpful than the ratings

I always remember who I\'m painting for - me. Bugger the ratings - if something I\'ve done inspires someone I\'m good.

ratings can be handy, to see what the general consensus is, but unless you are a doing it for money, you should only be worried what you think. i post stuff but tbh it\'s not often i check scores. it\'s comments that make the difference to me

I\'m guessing, because of your gallerty, that this is because you\'ve entered the CMON competition.

Knowing how tense I got during the last one, it reminded me that an online competition where the general public can vote, is quite flawed. It\'s possible other competitors have emailed all their friends and asked for votes.....or on another forum....you simply don\'t know

It\'s early days though.....be patient, there\'s a couple of weeks of voting to go

but in future, I\'d advise you to post minis not in competition, and link them into the forums and ask for feedback and try to improve your painting.

@All - Thanks, guess I\'ll post on the forums now for some good feedback.... ratings really shouldn\'t bother me, but if I\'m getting good advice then I suppose whatever ratings I\'m getting shouldn\'t bother me.

@ CEL - That\'s an interesting observation and corresponding experiment...damn haters....hehe

@ Orb - Ya so far I\'ve only entered the competitions. It\'s a double edged sword I suppose. The system is \"flawed,\" but on the other hand I enjoy a real deadline. The previous contest I wasn\'t as bothered. I was actually inspired to repaint her because I felt I could push the model further. Although there was that one submission that \"mysteriously maintained a 7.3\" that really got under my skin. Same guy this time too....anyways I\'ll go be at one with my painting for a little while and brush this one off.

Paint for your own enjoyment and take the good crit with the bad. Not everyone will like what you do. Sometimes a not so good painted mini will score high because it\'s COOL, not just because of the paint job.

All I can say is that you are not alone. I get frustrated alot about my painting. Seems like everyone else on the site is improving so much while my painting seems to get worse.

I do not worry about ratings so much. I get frustrated when I see that some people have found the secret to perfect blending and color use while I just cannot attain it for the life of me.

I guess I will suggest to you to not worry so much about ratings. I feel that the main purpose of this site is not so much to showcase work but to bring an active worldwide community together for the betterment of the hobby. You have use of the forums and access to world class painters that can help you improve your work. Just keep painting, be patient, and share your work so that everyone here can help you get better.
