Hi Guys (and girls)

I\'m a new to the site and painting miniatures (just one so far) and I\'ve only rated about 2,000 miniatures on the site but I need to ask about ratings. Basically I have never given a 10. To me that\'s a score that says \'Perfection\' and if I was to give it a 10 then it would have to be a sculpt AND a world class paint job! Please let me know your views on the subject.
Otherwise guys (and girls) I\'m loving the hobby and CMON.

Have a good one

It\'s really all subjective... I figure I should say somethign before people start throwing links at you to other threads, and saying how \"it isn\'t about the scores\" etc.

Apart from all of my minis being 10\'s, I would agree with you. If it makes me stop and go WOW, then I give it a 10. There are a lot that come close, and they get 9, but every once in a while...

I give out 10\'s like candy....I vote almost completely on \'the cool\' factor.

I dig your user name...5150.

When I was new to this site I was so amazed by stuff that I gave out 10s left and right. Now I\'ve gotten hardened! :D So, nowadays I give out between 1 and 5 10s a month perhaps. But, I really believe the 10 should be used or it\'ll become a useless grade. No mini will be a perfect 10 anyway, since not all people judge things the same way!

I\'ve given three 10s in the time I\'ve been here so they are definately something I reserve for very special minis. A 10 doesn\'t mean perfection for me though, just that it is amongst the very best. The voting guidelines say a 10 is amazing, not perfect, so if I think something is amazing I\'ll give it a 10.

I\'m with Vikey here. If I think something is cool, it gets a 10. I don\'t care if it\'s perfect or not.

If everyone was to vote like that, there\'d be no 9+ minis, just one or two perfect 10 rated ones. Ludicrous!:drunk:

\"The scores are unimportant\"

SO unimportant that voting seems to be a perpetual topic of discussion! :duh: SO unimportant that seemingly everybody has thier ranking in their signature  SO unimportant that people have been known to take their ball and storm off home over a .2 - a POINT 2 - drop in their score. So take it with a large grain of salt when people tell you that it\'s not about the scores and voting is unimportant. ;)

Having said that, voting is HIGHLY subjective. Everybody seems to have their own criteria and their own standards.

I myself vote pretty loosely. Almost nothing gets below a 5 for me. I also multiple vote on a lot of things to take advantage of decimal points. Thus I give out a lot more 9.3, 9.5, or 9.7s than pure 10s, but I do give out a fair amount of 10s as well. Like RItual said, though, there will never be a perfect 10 because someone will always think that it\'s no better than a 9.

Of course, HE will NEVER have a perfect 10 because I always automatically give him 1s on anything he posts ;) Helps to keep that ponderously swollen head of his in check, you know. :D

I wish I had some sort of objective system to describe...

Like vike, I go mainly on cool factor. And obviously that\'s artistic execution cool, not \"I like Space Marines, so that gets a 10.\" I\'ve probably given out a few dozen 10\'s so far.

When I\'m feeling grumpy, I give out lower scores. Sad but true.

I very seldom give out anything less than a 5. If it\'s painted recognizably and based, how can one say that it\'s not good enough for the table? If cmon was ever \"reinvented\" I would argue that 3 be tabletop quality.

perfection doent exist.

im all about the coolness. painting styles and techniques vary so widely that to vote on anything else is almost silly. typically uber-smooth hyper-real minis get high ranks around here, and thats great if thats what you\'re in to. i also like gritty, though, and character and mood can make a mini perfect. every artist has a different vision.

imho, you have a 10 button for a reason. if it was ment to be unattainable (it is :p), there wouldnt be one.

This is Cool Mini Or Not; not Perfect Mini Or Not. I vote according to whether I think it\'s cool or not. I\'ll see some minis that have ratings in the low to mid 9\'s that I don\'t think are all that cool. Then there are others that I think are very cool that are scoring 6\'s. It\'s all in the eye of the beholder. Like dauber, I may vote two, three, even four times on a mini to take advantage of the decimal points.

I have given several minis 10\'s because I think they\'re very, very cool, even though they may not be perfectly painted (or painted at all - Frodo wearing the One Ring, anyone?). I think I\'ve given out one score below 5 and that was because of a really bad, out of focus picture.

Scores are important here (obviously), but the score shouldn\'t be the reason for being in the hobby. It seems that some people become more obsessed with improving their score than with improving their painting. To me, your overall rating should be more of an indicator of your improvement than your be-all, end-all goal.

Just my two cents on that.

10 should be given to a mini you feel is amazing to you... since one vote don\'t affect the average much, it doesn\'t mean it\'s perfect.. there will never be a solid 10.

I vote basing myself on the current average, and think of reason i should give more, or less... Besides the mini itself, pics, montage, focal point are all important notions... and the cool factor is like fashion, it changes a lot, and it can be hard to keep up.

If the scores are so important, there are ways to make a mini score others than painting better ( Just think of all the trends there as been, picture quality, subject choice and so on...). It\'s not the reason to be for a hobbyist, but to anyone on the commercial level, Pics, CMON, score and rank all go to better sales, if not the only way; so I guess it\'s important.

I hear that! I\'ll give a 10 for a mini I think is really cool, a medium-high class paintjob can score as well as a master\'s in my book. I\'m personally a big fan of cartoony and old school styles. That isn\'t saying I give anything else low votes, but it is what gets me off.

This isn\'t \"FlawlesslyPaintedandCoveredinFreehandandNotMetalMetalorNot.com\".

Is your name a =VH= reference? Eddie used to be my hero when I was but a little Jake.

The cool thing about the 5150, (not only a great VH album) is that it\'s the California Police\'s code number for a mentally disturbed person)

I\'ll be honest, I\'ve virtually given up voting as a mainstream activity.(*)
Instead I vote and commment (Which I think is more important) mostly on figures where I think I can give advice or suggestions for improvement.

(* One of the reasons is due to the amount of Images that I\'ve seen, through comment moderation, being given fanboy 10\'s, as well as the amount of images we approve daily. Usually if there is an image I see that I think I can assist with a comment then I note the number or posters name and act accordingly.
To be honest I have to admit to a couple of my own fanboy moments, usually on mini\'s I think have a superb paintwork or exceptional pieces of conversion/alteration, but I think that overall the comments are more worthwhile for people posting than the scores themselves.)

Agree with a lot of what has been said. Cool is definitely the biggest factor for me. And like Dauber I don\'t think I\'ve ever given below a 5. If I give below 8 I try to always leave a comment that is constructive and hopefully helpful.

I try to keep my voting steady but, as with others, it may fluctuate if I\'m in particularly good or bad mood. Bearing in mind I do all my voting etc whilst at work the latter is more likely. However, I have a mental scale/checklist when voting based around what I believe is \"tabletop\" (cleanly painted, good colours and based but not shading/highlighting etc) and work from there. I also tend to judge minis compared to what I think is my current skill level so if I think I could produce a similar standard I\'d vote it a 6 or maybe 7 (that\'s just where I think I am right now). I\'ve given 10s (but not too many) when I\'ve had occasion to wipe drool off my monitor  and I\'ve voted lower than 5 (possibly on to many occasions) when the painting is messy, incomplete, not based etc. I also try to comment whenever I have something to add so I\'m more likely to comment with lower scores than high ones.
