is it just me or is the average painted just getting a lot better? over about the last month i have been on CMON just about daily and every day i\'m seeing minis that are getting 6 or 7 and they say that it\'s their first mini. i have been painting for about 3 years now, i\'ve done more minis than i can count, and all it\'s got me is a 5.1 for my best miniature, which even then looked like something a child could do. Do i just suck at mini painting or something, or is something going on here?

you don\'t suck at painting, everyone picks up on it at different rates and I have noticed a change in scores. The average score dropped about a point around last December.

forget scores.

a lot of people look at this site and read the articles for a while before starting to paint.

knowing what you need to do before doing it makes things a lot easier.
also some people pick things up quickly to begin with.

the main thing is that any one who wants to be bleeding good at anything has to put the practice in, raw talent only gets you so far.

just enjoy what you do :)

Sometimes when I read comments it isn\'t always clear to me whether the person means \'this is the first mini I painted ever\' or \'this is the first mini I\'m posting on CMON\'. Could that be the case with some of the minis you\'ve seen?

Just to be clear, I have painted before. I used to paint 17 years ago but never was very good. I have a couple of things I painted before I found Cmon up on here. The last mini I posted (my half orc) was the 1st I painted just for pictures. I am getting a 7 right now, but I read everything that\'s on here before I started this one and Tracy (TABStudio) gave me pointers as I went along.

I can understand your frustration and I wanted to make sure I wasn\'t adding to it. I\'ve looked at your stuff and its pretty good. Just keep plugging away at it!

i think they are getting better.

the skills are easier to find and people are teaching others their tricks on the webs. far less trial and error.

if you have a good teacher you can get a 6 on your third mini. thats relying heavily on their composition skills and your technique.

I\'m with Shawn on this. Are you having fun? if so then who cares what the score is. ;) Scores can be good motivation to improve but they aren\'t the \'be all and end all\'....of it all. Enjoy, read a few articles and try them out. ;)

scores can be misleading anyway, mini\'s that win golden demons and the like can be rated lower than you think, its all personal opinion, some mini\'s seem to be more popular than others before they even get paint on them and flashy bases seem to please people too.
My standard seems to not improve at times then you can suddenly get a boost

I find that if I enjoy what I\'m doing I tend to do a better job. That\'s not to say that a lot of practice doesn\'t help but having fun tends to make the learning easier.

@Dr Avern - That\'s me. I had 20 years of seriously pursuing many artistic avenues before I started into minis.

You shouldn\'t let scores bother you. I personally find this site more coolphotoofminiornot
Just enjoy what you do and continue to push yourself.

Well if you consider that this is the only thing that makes me feel worth anything these days it kinda pisses me off to see some newbie get a 7 average. i enjoy it, and it\'s good to see what other people do so i can learn but it just pisses me off to be so inferior. i mean really, what do i do? i try to start an army and i do the first one or two characters and then i can\'t paint it any more and then i start something new. /wallpunch

Well first off.. you don\'t have one finished figure in your gallery and I know this has been brought up before in other threads you have started.. Its all Works in Progress. You can\'t expect any kind of an honest vote for a WIP..I for one won\'t even vote or coment on them if it\'s put in the gallery. If you want comments and advice on how to improve post quality pictures in the works in progress form and let people comment, listen to the advice and finish something and then let us vote for proper on it. Id finish stuff and delete all the WIPs in your gallery as you go along.

Also if you want people to deal with you like an adult and professional ..start acting like one. The little rants about newbies and the \"wall punches\" go no where with people like myself. We will give you the advice and the incouragement and fair votes.. but you need to earn it.

Now go finish something..thats an order ;) and that means base work too!
