I can\'t remember the first mini I ever tried to paint. The earliest I remember is a really old witch from Ral Partha and boy was I an aweful painter back then. <G> I found it a few months ago and stripped it for the good of the world.

Memories...

A Elder Swooping Hawk. I had no idea at the time what \"Eldar\" were, I just thought he looked cool with wings.

I\'ve sure learned a lot since...

You mean the little limited edition one with wings that keep falling off? :D Well, at least mine did. Didn\'t help that my idiot friend was tossing it up and down in the air during a game session.

Umm...I don\'t want to reach that far back into my mind. I might disturb the dust. Heh. I think the first mini I ever did was...ummm...old plastic Dark Elves from Warhammer Fantasy. Prior to that, I only had done plastic model kits with enamels. Thinking back on it now, those all were hideous. :p

@ Anatora - Wood Elf dragon? Wow...you don\'t start small do you?

@ Duende - What do you mean? I still think the Eldar are cool. Psychotic and nihilistic...but cool. lol

Hmm, can\'t exactly remember my first but one of my first, and still my favorite of all my old minis, Ral Partha Midnight from Forgotten Realms. Saxon Angel did a beautiful version of her, my goal is to someday find another one, and now that I paint a little bit better ;) not much mind you, but alittle bit, I would love to paint another to compare!

What! Eldar do what they do for the good of their own race\'s survival. If using and manipulating other races to absorb or divert any threat to their own... well, what\'s psychotic or nihilistic about that? That\'s survival of the fittest.

You must be thinking of Dark Eldar. Now, THEY\'RE psychotic and nihilistic!

Why am I arguing? They\'re all fictional anyway!
:p

It\'s always fun to throw this old girl up for a little exposure, here is my first mini, an old Ral Partha I think...

Firstminipost.jpg

she\'s had a little damage over the years, but you can basically see what I was doing with her. I keep her at my painting desk as a reminder :)

Interestingly though, this was the first and last bow that I ever strung, I used a hair from my gf at the time. Also interestingly enough the first and last gf who approved of my mini painting. Maybe a connection...hmmmm

For me, either a Ral Partha cleric with serpent staff or a Ral Partha mummy, can\'t remember which I did first. But , hey, that was back in \'82 or \'83! Painted for a year or two back then, then took a looooooong pause!

The first mini in my new painting period was an Ulteamarine space marine from the 3. ed. started set...don\'t have the figure here, I\'ll post a pic as soon as I get ahold of it.:D

@ TAB Studio -- Tracy, you\'ve been painting for 2 1/2 years only and you\'re doing the stuff you do?! Amazing! Maybe there hope for us mortals!

I can actually remember this. I was 12. I\'d just been introduced to Dungeons and Dragons for the second time (the first time was way back when the rules were scattered through Dragon Magazine and making a character took 12 issues)...

It was a Ral Partha Paladin with a pretty cool pose (I still have him. I\'ll post a pic later). I won the mini in a bet with a friend over who could throw a baseball farther.

He still has the original paint job (chipped and rubbed shiny and all), lacking primer, lacking base coat, lacking even the slightest hint of shading... and done with Testors model paints, and those big plastic brushes that came with the two-tiered \'wheel\' set.

What did I know?

I\'m a little better, now, I think, than I was then.

Second minis I got were two Ral Partha boxed sets. The Halflings and the Dwarves sets. I think I actually still have a few of them, too.

On a laughter side: I recently bought on ebay, a lot of 87 minis, and got a few of my old ones back that I\'d thought lost, years ago. With my initials still painted on the bottom of the bases. Somehow, they\'d gone south of the border, far to the west, and been picked up there.
Nostalgia....

Well if you stopped trying to rip their hair out they might not mind so much.

lol

First mini I painted was an old GW Cyberman from their Dr Who range. Must have been about 17 year ago. Covered him in Humbrol silver enamel and then drybrushed a little black over the top. Took me fookin ages to realise that I was drybrushing the wrong way round. Thick c**t that I am.

lol

And no, I can\'t show a pic of him (or the other 3 that came in the pack). They all went they same way that that bloody Reaper Warmaiden went.

:D

I\'m not 100% sure. I do know the first mini I owned was the soreress from Diablo (not counting the heroquest game)... but I don\'t think that was the very first mini I painted. That would be either my 15mm scale demonworld archer (which I think was the first) or Si\'Rene from Spyglass... anyway these 3 were done in the same month so it doesn\'t make that much of a differnce I think.

I\'m sure we had a recent thread along these lines, but it\'s probably past page 7 by now. My first minis painted are some Dark Elf crossbowmen. Looking at them again, they\'re not as bad as I was starting to believe - it certainly helps to read before embarking on a first mini. However, I overestimated the power of thin washes back then even though it served as a seed for my personal realisation of tweening.

My first mini was either a FASA Star Trek ship (what I was playing at the time) or a Dr. Who Dalek figure, also from FASA both around 88-90. As for skill, I really sucked out loud. I didn\'t even know to undercoat. After about \'91 I didn\'t paint again until 2002.

Well, the first mini I ever painted was a Necromunda Van Saar Juve. I don\'t have a pic, but if you look at the stuff in my gallery you\'ll get an idea of how bad it was.

Boy it sucks when you don\'t seem to improve.

<turns on WAYback machine>

The first box of minis I bought was Galactic Rebellion by Heritage around 1980 or so (the line was basically a Star Wars rip off). The sculpts are pretty bad and my paint jobs on them are even worse but I still think they\'re beautiful :)

I still have them (stored away somewhere) so maybe when I get back to the States I’ll take some pics and post them so you all can see how lovely they are. lol

My first mini was a Ral Partha lisard rider. I stripped all my minis years ago so can\'t show the hideous first paint job. I can\'t even show the mini any longer because I recently sold him to WiccanPony in a box of very old lead. When last seen, his hand was broken, his leg was a separate piece and his spear was missing completely. Interesting looking lizard though - head kind of like the original illustration of the Jabberwoki
