Dangerous when wet
Hey,
So then, what started out as a merry little idea in the back of my mind after the end of Nanowrimo '09 has blown into something rather bigger than I was expecting. Marvellous! I love it when a plan comes together, to borrow a tired catchphrase. My name is James Griffin, and I have a blog here if you're at all interested in anything about me.
Sculpt along? What's that?
I am keen to break down some of the taboos about sculpting - it's not some arcane science! I also want to get some of my hobby friends to pick up the putty for the first time in earnest - it's such a rewarding part of my hobby, that I really want to share that with others.
That's how the Sculpt along came about. I will sculpt a miniature, in this case the 'Mad Hatter' from my forthcoming 'Malice in Wonderland' range, and anyone who wishes to participate will do so, a little bit each week. The event kicks off properly on the first of January, and at that point, participants will be putting in around an hour or so per week (depending on their particular sculpts) for around eight weeks to get to a finished full sculpt.
Who is the sculpt along for?
I'm hoping that this will give new prospective sculptors the chance to give it a try in a safe and supportive environment. I had to learn from teaching myself and hearsay largely. It would have been great to have had others with more experience on hand, as well as other newbies poking away at the same mistakes I was. It should also be good for established sculptors too though, some to showcase their work, some to help out others, from the good of their heart, and some who want to learn, develop and improve, or simply compare notes and see how other people do it.
Can I join in?
Yes, come on in, if you don't already know, I hope you'll find that sculpting is awesome. All you have to do is to message me (click on my name to the right of this post) on CMON, through my blog, or comment on any of my sculpt along posts to let me know. Then you will be most welcome to start your own wip thread in this part of the CMON forum for C&C from your fellow participants, and the rest of the lovely CMONers as they see fit. The more people who get on board with this, the better it will be for all concerned, so go for it. There aren't any plans for this to be anything other than a one-off, so get it while it's hot! Plus, it's one cool new years resolution
What's this forum for?
Well that's a cool thing - CMON have been kind enough to give the participants of the event somewhere to post their work in progress pictures, their questions, comments, and anything else they want for the duration of the event. Wasn't that nice of them?
I want to know more!
Ok then,
Here is the initial posthttp://griffinguides.com/sculptalong-putting-my-feelers-out/ that I wrote to gauge the interest.
and here are the three 'preparation' posts, designed to give you the opportunity to come up with the idea, and to gather together the tools and materials you will be needing in advance of the start date:
1. How the Sculpt Along will work, and information on putty
2. Tools and materials for sculpting
3. Getting the concept
What do I need to know about the Sculpt along forum?
Well for starters, you should register for coolminiornot.com, that'll allow you to post your own threads and replies in here. There isn't any limit for the amount of stuff you can post or anything, just make sure it's related to the sculpt along
My suggestion would be that each participant, should they wish, makes themself a thread, introduces themself and what they are going to be working on, and then if you have any queries, issues or work in progress shots to put up, you can do that there for others, including myself to comment on. it helps keep you accountable for your progress, and it gives you the opportunity to get some feedback from some wonderfully talented people. Fantastic! Double win!
If you need anything else, then contact me here, and I'll do my best to help.
Finally, the very best of luck to everyone involved, you're all absolute legends for giving this a try, and although it'll at times doubtless be frustrating and hard, I hope that together we can pull through to the end, triumphant!
Go for it!
Happy Sculpting,
James
