Really fine detail brushes

Dear all


Probably a frequently covered subject...but...

Does anyone have any suggestions for sources of brushes for doing VERY fine freehand detail?

I\'ve tried a heap of different brushes from a pro-modeling store I use here in London all the time, including a 0000, which didn\'t come to a sharp enough point, and two fine \'lining brushes\' which come to VERY sharp points, but are too long and thin to control when doing anything other than very fine straight lines.

What i am trying to paint is some very fine scrollwork on terminator armour, very very fine, like 0.2mm thick including some fairly tight curves...

Getting the paint/water/ink mixes right to achieve detail that fine I can do... but I seem to still be struglung to get a brush that will hold a sharp enough point but is rigid enough to cope with tight curves and sharp details...


Any suggestions?

A lot of people i ahve seen posting on this subject suggest Windsor & Newton 000 brushes.

I bought some from Rune Kappels shop and have been very impressed by their quality. linky here:

What about cheating and using a pen?

It did cross my mind as I used to use the old Rotring technical pens and they were insanely fine.... but they only come in black, and the detail isn\'t necesarily in black

Ah right, yeah I guess...

There are other makes that come in different colours, but probably not in lighter colours like white, yellow etc...

Have you tried improvising and trying stuff? Like stippling with a cocktail stick or something? I don\'t know! lol

You could try these pens and W&N brushes, or Kappel\'s brushes, will do fine

I\'ll second that! on both counts,

I bought the set of Kappel brushes, and they have been performing admirably so far, they hold paint well, you can paint an extremely thin line even with an 0, definitely value for money.

I have used a drawing pen for similar sort of work on the Green knight, the lighting almost obscures it but you can just make it out

Hi,

I\'m using DaVinci Red Sable brushes
from 00000 to 1. There is no big difference between 00000 and 000 except the amount of used hair but i got some brushes in 00000 with very short hairs so you have control where to place the colour. Soundn\'t be a problem to paint the scrollwork with them.
I do such things in this way:
I take the wet brush and form the hairs with
my wet lips to a sharp point. Then i take a smal amount of thinned black colour from my wet palett without distroying the formed hairs. And sometimes i do it the other way around.

Depending on what you are doing, you may try doing it with the black pen then painting over the black. It will be a lot easier to paint the line that\'s already there with any brush than to try to put it on a blank surface with a brush you\'re not satisfied with.
plus, in some cases you want the dark outline to your drawing.

I use W&N Series 7 miniature brush 000 for fine detailing. You can get thinner brushes, but then they will most likely not have as good points or the same \"springiness\" of the bristles which means you\'ll have less brush control. I haven\'t tried Kaple\'s brushes yet, so I can\'t compare the two.

Smaller than 000 is a waste, in my experience. I tried a 0000 brush, and it\'s past useless - the paint dries on the brush before you get anywhere near the mini. A good 000 with a good point will do anything that a 0000 can do. In fact, a top 0 will achieve the same results, since the point will be as fine as any 0000\'s point.

So, if a 000 doesn\'t do the job for you, try pens and don\'t waste money on anything smaller.
