Really old school LOTR mini

Well, I am actually pleasantly surprised that this one hit over 5, since it was such an old mini. Some of the older CMON members probably remember these minis, and more importantly the original LOTR movie on which they were based. Enjoy!

From what I remember that film started as a bright idea but was pretty rubish and only covered a very small part of the first book.

I like those old LoTR minis. I have a few myself, I\'ll have to dig them out.

I actually quite liked the animated LOTR. It somehow felt more faithfull to the book. Shame it was never finished really.

[ot] @Target... the treeman you have in the top minis last 7 days is mindblowingly ace! :D [/ot]

I remember the \"cartoon\" LOTR as being one of the scariest films I\'d watched as a child. There was something about the style of animation that seemd so dark and intense - similar feel to Watership Down. I imagine that if I watched it again now it wouldn\'t have quite the same effect on me.

By the way, nice mini Treide, Ilove the classics

That old LOTR film actually went a good ways into the Two Towers. IIRC the battle of Helm\'s Deep was in it. I remember a scene where Gandalf and Theoden met on the battlefield. I thoght it was very good, but I was probably 12 or 13 the last time I watched it, so I don\'t know what I would think of it today.

Thanks for all the nice comments!

@hubbabubba - Most of my \"yet to be painted\" minis are old ones. I have bought a few Reaper minis since I got back into painting, but have been \"practicing\" on the older ones. I have several old Grenadier sets, including two from their LOTR range, a few Citadel LOTR minis, and some more of the Elan Merch ones. I also have some old Ral Parthas (sets and loose figures), some West End Games Star Wars minis, and various other odds and ends. Its all good!

@Ritual, Highbulp Billy, Target, & Beelzebrush - I actually really liked the old Bakshi LOTR film. It is surprising how closely it follows the storyline. Unfortunately, the animation technique used at the time was apparently so costly that they ran out of money and had to stop in the midst of Two Towers. It is worth watching again just to see the unique animation style for the time - no CGI there! HBB is right about it being dark and intense - the Ringwraith scenes were particularly scary. Apparently a Return of the King animated film was made by a different group, but was of much poorer quality (I have never seen it).

Didn\'t they use some animation over real live fotage in that? I remember some scenes looked like that (similar to how A Scanner Darkly was done more recently).

Yes, that was a Bakshi standard. In \"Wizards\" he shows footage of nazis in WWII with animation covering them.

I like seeing the old stuff even though some is pretty poor.
I\'ll check if I still have my White Hand ork from that series - may have sold it to Wiccanpony in a lot of lead I sold her - and if I do, you\'re welcome to it if you want.

@vincegamer - I actually have some of the White Hand orcs from that line so I probably don\'t need yours - thanks for the offer, though. There are some other cool ones too - I have a Gandalf holding fireworks, a mounted Theoden, and a cool one piece \"diorama\" showing Gollum tethered by Lorien ropes to Sam. I also have Legolas (at least I assume it is him). Also lots of other orcs/Uruk-hai.

@ Ritual - I haven\'t seen A Scanner Darkly, but vincegamer is right about the animation over live footage in the Bakshi films. Very innovative for its time.

I haven\'t seen it either, just a trailer. I\'m generally not very keen on watching things with Keanu Reeves in the lead role, animated or not! :D

OK so Im not gunna talk about the movie. More highlights on your minis Treide. Your reds for instance could use a little orange for high lights.

Your stuff is definitely coming along tho.
