I'm hoping if I post here, I'll get better and feel a bit more motivated to paint.

On this mini, I'm going to try to work on cloth highlights and fleshtones in particular.

Need to get another lamp, and if anybody has a good "how to use gimp for mini pictures for idiots" guides, that'd be good.

Tell me are you just starting is the flesh done let us know bud where are you at exactly so f
As for me I can give the appropriate response what I'm asking is basically at this point what's your next steps m8 : ) the w I p will Def help you stay motivated simo, bye cause us as viewers will give our 2 cents in andif youou take some of the viewers ideas, advice tips etc you should see I mediate improvement in each image uploaded. Remembr this his each of us on the w I p are here to get advice to paint a better miniature. If you don't think in those terms it's hard to improve so be open and take it from there . From here this stage are you done with the base color and looks like you've even shadedo the flesh tones but at the scale we work at we must exaggerate the shades and highlights I would go back in there and start manually laying in deeper shades for a barbarian and most flesh colors I use a bit of purples in my shades ex b/N THE PEC MUSCLES underneath the chin inside the biceps. Not just washing the whole thing going but again laying in each shadow is a more precise way of painting just like laying on highlights . So let me know where your planning to go next and I'll offer a year ideas that I would do a double others will also . You don't have to take everybody's advice but hey all folks have many different styles a day in the end date it's up to you , the artist , who makes the final call. We're al, here to improve bud.

I've never done anything with that much flesh before, so what I'm likely to end up doing is working through until I can really get all his muscles popping. Would a really, really deep red possibly work for an addition to the shadow? I'm using Tanned Shadow, Skin, and Highlight from Reaper Miniatures, that's really all his fleshtones are at all.

The cloth, my wife wanted me to go for the "shiny silk" effect, which is actually coming along pretty good for my first attempt (at least she says so). Using Nightmare Black as the shadow, with blends through Sapphire Blue and LED Blue for the shimmer.

Yes red can compliment the or purple . But yes red works too. Anything that compliments a color is directly across on the color wheel right. But also colors that lie next to each other are also harmonious as analogous colors. So yes tanned flesh has some brown and red in it do red as a really dark red or reddish brown can work your 100% right mate. Just remember the way to shade that people do I would use a red brown glaze (very thinned down to a glaze) now here's the trick after a few layers of it , you take the same shade that you glazed in and this time it's maybe not so thinned. (You don't have to use diff colors for shadow: highlights) the fact that the second group of layered shades are less thinned should look more i tense and this are layers into the recesses. After that use a WASH type consistancy on your last group if shades with that same color. And lay that into the really tight crevices . The 3 diff groups of the same shade (red brown) becoming less and less thinned should really have Intensified at this point producing a gradation of shadows. Do this and then repost well see what it looks like. If this is hard to comprehend go to my gallery and send me a pm to my personal gmail and well work together to have you absorb what I mean. I don't mind helping anybody at all I paint 24/day and help people on cmon in b/n so feel free bud to hit me up. Well make it happen.;)
