Reaper Demoness - Critique sought

People suggested I look to critique on models in progress if I seek to advance in skill, so here it is. What am I doing wrong that my minis are getting 6.5 or so when I post them?

I thought I was pretty good... :(

Hi Glen she looks pretty good but as you know cmon is all about really good pics..I am liking the hot/fire look and the cool colors on the hair and horns sort of a Inuasha look..but a bit better pics would be my 2 cents..keep at it looking good:)

I think the problem is that the CCD on my camera is dying. She sure doesn\'t look that blotchy when I look at her on my painting table.

I just hadn\'t noticed how bad the pics were getting. Like when you gradually lose your sense of sight or hearing.

A couple of things that I can see. I dont see a problem with the score. maybe she should be in the low sevens but not much higher.

The blendings could be a bit smoother and the base looks like its unfinished.

People will generally only score on what they see and the pic shows to me a 6.5 - 7.5 mini. Its good work tho dont despair, its not about the score tho its about your enjoyment of painting minis after all.

Good luck

It\'s a WIP shot, so no the base is not finished. I\'m not a moron, I\'m know that the base needs to be finished.

Sorry, didn\'t mean to be snippy. I only just noticed that I didn\'t say it was a WIP.

Here\'s a closeup of the face. Again, there seems to be an odd distortion in the reds and oranges that doesn\'t exist on the real mini. Some form of imminent collapse on my camera maybe?

It is a five year old remanufactured 4 MP Olympus. The thing is writing dog slow too, but I want people to tell me that I don\'t need to blow the green on a new camera. That you just change setting X and it\'ll be all good.

Glen, the face is really subtle, but I agree with Ogrebane..usually the pics pop up the people usually look at it maybe 5 seconds if they are just flipping thru and go by the pics..ive even seen comments left on ovious wip with it in the post and the first thing is usually it doesnt look finished .lol.so take scores with a grain of salt pal if you worry over it youre not enjoying yourself..

I really like the model and the eyes are brill. Does look like issues with the pictures though (Could just be the fact that a camera up close will show more flaws than your eyes really see!)

I don\'t know if you\'re going to wash or glaze over the flesh areas, but as yet, for me you need more transititions through the colours to acheive more subtlety.

COOL

I really like the colours on this model,

I am inclined to agree with Ogrebane, a little more blending and the skin would be perfect, (only a little more blending you hear!!!:D)

Dude dont take the scores to heart, i got a 7 for my worst figure and 6.7 for one that got through to the gd finals, its all in the picture quality,

Cheers,

Iain.

I think you\'re right. Maybe it should be CoolMiniPicOrNot?

Anyways, my Old remanufactured Olympus Camedia C-4000 just burped and died. I notice a sort of moire on the rough spots of those pics. Do you see it too? The sort of smeary appearance to the cheek?

Other\'s who\'ve seen my models in person have stated unequivocally that there\'s something up with the photos.

I\'ve ordered a new toy after eBaying a bunch of my excess crap. In a week or two I\'ll have a Canon PowerShot A630.

I\'m not a moron either and I see two bigish problems with the mini: :drunk:
1) Skin is a bit blotchy (as many others have mentioned).
2) The horns are a little lifeless, need some darker browns in the recesses and at the base.

As to \'CoolMiniPicorNot\'... It\'s pretty darn hard to give a mini a good score if it doesn\'t look good. One can\'t really imagine what it might look like if the painter had better photography skills.

Not sure I would put it quite like that MPJ but the pic is the only thing we can go by. If the pic is bad or too small or blurry then all we can do is vote on what we see. But dont worry too much about the score. The most important thing is some valued comments which you have here to help improve your work. If you work on your blending and make the layers smoother plus do some work on the horn then the score will improve.

Good luck.

I\'ve done some more work on it, but any more will be polishing the turd. I\'ll just move on to the next project, and we\'ll see how much the camera has affected things in a week or so.
