Reaper: Finari, Female Justicar (Pic Heavy)

Inspiration often changes our plans for the order of pieces we work on, doesn\'t it? I had been working on a Rackham Wolfen for my girlfriend to use for her White Wolf game, but her group hadn\'t met to play for a couple of sessions, so it fell, temporarily, out of the top priority slot. After it was done, I was going to tackle my ME16 Privateer Press Vanguard warjack, but after assembly and priming, it got knocked off my desk and exploded, and is now awaiting some heavy-duty repair work that I\'m not sure I\'m capable of doing. I may have to attempt conversion just to get it together again.

But, I digress. Some time back, I started a WIP for a dragon, and it, too, fell by the wayside for a while. I\'m easily distracted, sometimes.

In this case, distraction came in the form of this Reaper miniature, which I bought (already painted) from someone. Its original paintjob wasn\'t bad, but it wasn\'t the colour choices I\'d use, nor was it as fine as I thought it could be. It was lacking highlights in many places, and had used metallic paints. I\'ve been making many attempts at NMM, lately, with varying degrees of success, and wanted to give this mini a serious effort.

I\'ve been taking pictures of her quite regularly through the last week or so, and have been discussing my progress, and how to keep the standard up on her with the Chat crew, here. DIablofollower, Antnol, Paintman Spiff, Queenoftheunifrogs, Michal, and others that make less frequent appearances. They\'ve all been fantastic for encouragement and feedback, throughout, so before the flood of pictures, I wanted to be sure I acknowledged their incredibly helpful contributions.

Days 1 and 2 (Sat. & Sun. June 7&8):

The very first thing I did on her (after priming) was her flesh. Since only her face is exposed skin. I\'ve used only Vallejo Game Colour on her, so all colours are from that line. I base-coated it with Parasite Brown, and worked up through Bronze Fleshtone, with highlights in Pale Flesh. Her eyes are Livery Green with Black for her pupils.

The armour began with a base coat of 50/50 Cold Grey and Black, and worked up using Stonewall Grey, and Dead White, with the final highlights being plain Dead White.

Day 3 (Monday June 9):
I had the day off work, so after running to government offices to renew my passport, I came home and settled myself in to work. This was my \'Day of Red\'. I wanted my reds to look right, and smooth, and for me, that takes a long time. The initial pics of this stage aren\'t very good (they were very rushed), but you\'ll see it better in pictures farther along in this thread.

The basecoat here was Scar Red and Black at 5 parts to 1 part, working up using Bloody Red, Hot Orange, and Bad Moon Yellow.

Day 4 (Tuesday June 10):

Another day off work, and absolutely nothing to do but paint from waking. Of course, that isn\'t exactly what happened. I read for a while, watched a movie, went for a walk, and then after much dawdling, made myself sit down to paint.

So, feeling emboldened by the comments I\'d gotten, I settled in to work on the Gold NMM. This was a lot of fun . . . in that \'God, what the f*** was I thinking trying to do Gold NMM?\' kind of way. I had to re-start it several times, but when I finally got rolling, and was happy with it, it seemed to start going very quickly.

I only did a frontal shot on this day. I don\'t remember why, right now. Probably just laziness.

I started off the gold trying for a slightly darker look, beginning with Charred Brown with a touch of Parasite Brown (about 6-1), and worked up using Gold Yellow, Bad Moon Yellow, and White. It didn\'t end up looking as dark as I\'d been aiming for, but in the end, I was pretty pleased.

Day 5 (Wed. June 11):

Back to work, so I was limited to evening painting, instead of getting to kill a whole (ok, most of it) day painting again.

Quite a bit was actually done. Her hair, and everything white. I was motivated, and the paint went on smoothly without any major errors on my part.

I base coated the whites with Ghost Grey, and then did a lot of extremely thinned whites to keep it smooth. There were a few touch-ups to it over the next few days, as well, when I spotted things I wasn\'t entirely pleased with.

Her hair is Parasite Brown and Bone White mixed at about 50/50, highlights using Bad Moon Yellow and Dead White, and then washed several times with GW\'s Flesh Wash.

Her pants (at her butt, back of left leg) and her belt pouch were based in Tan with Cold Grey (about 3-1), and highlighted with dabblings of Pale Flesh.

Day 6 (Thursday June 12):

Gloves, belts, straps, scabbard, and buckles. A lot of small things, this day. The gloves and scabbard, I did mixing Cold Grey and Gory Red as a base coat at 50-50, and highlighted just using Hot Orange washes. The belt and straps are Parasite Brown and Bone White with more GW Flesh Wash to darken them slightly, when it got too light. The belt buckle and the bottom of the scabbard were based in Sombre Grey and worked up with Dead White.

Since then:
A lot of little fixes. Things I discussed with the Chat crew, got advice on. I wound up scraping her sword right back down to bare metal and doing over, because the highlights weren\'t right, and it looked a little lumpy in a few spots. Added a few more GW Flesh Washes to her hair to make it more pronounced, but had to stop before it went from Blonde to Brown.
Added another White highlight to the NMM Gold. Darklined the shield with Brown, around the cross, to help its definition.

The last two images are her basically \'finished\', having spent a good 40 minutes chatting about the images. (I told them I\'d hunt down and kill anyone that said she needs to be based, because I knew that, already :D) And I still know it. I\'m not, at this point, certain if I\'m going to leave her on that plastic base, or remove it and put her onto something else, and until I decide on that, she\'s going to sit there, mostly complete. I want to stick her into a diorama, ultimately, but I have to decide if she\'ll be removeable (for possible RPG use) or static and strictly for display.

She has yet to be varnished, so if there are any good suggestions, I can still do fixes to her, as well.

Nice update! I think it\'s a good idea to make threads like these even if it\'s for your own reference later down the line.

I really like the colour choice. Some of the highlights on the NMM are a little harsh but overall great job.

Looking good, one suggestion though. On the back of the skirt, I would add in more shadows in the folds. Right now, they t look too close to the basecoat color.
