Reaper Master Series and Vellejo Model Colour

Ok, well I\'m thinking of giving the two aformentioned ranges a try at some point. I have the usual GW range and some P3, which I will be getting more of. I guess I want to know which colours RMS and VMC are people\'s favourites or consider the best. Also, which ones do you think would best compliment the paints I already have?

Thats a bit of a broad question.

Never used RMS but there are 220 VMC paints in the range, picking a few out would be really hard.

I would suggest getting a colour chart (I got one from my local model zone) and just picking a few.

You could tick off the colour\'s you have in GW paint then get a few that you havn\'t got.

I thought it may have been a bit broad. Ok, I can see which colours aren\'t filled by the other ranges but how about which colours are better in the RMS or VMC ranges that the others do have, if you get my drift?

different painters like different colours from different companies for different reasons.

i know that\'s not what you want to hear as it\'s not helpfull, bit it\'s just like that.
it\'s down to personal taste and needs.

vmc is great for giving you natural tones but you can achieve these with reaper, pp paints as well as gw, coat d\'arms and foundry just to name a few.

try out the odd new paint here and there and you will eventualy find all the different colours from a variety of ranges that you prefer.

Yeah, that\'s what I thought, but I guess I was fishing for sggestions on which colours would be good to start with. I suppose maybe if I said what it is I will be painting that may help. Apart from my daemonhunters (I\'ve started with the GW paints so I\'ll continue with those, except maybe for the inquisitor and retinue), I have a large skaven army, so browns, and I\'ll be using greens for clothing. I have Tau, but am not sure what colours yet. I\'ll also be buying a couple of armies for DBA. Oh and next warhammer army is Wood Elves in autumn aspect.

personaly i recomend looking around for bargain sets that will give you a good deal on groups of paints that would be helpfull.

try black hat miniatures for coat d\'arms paints. they were the origional citadel paints are are cheaper than gw\'s current range.

There are a bunch of threads on Reaper\'s forums on this very topic that would let you get the opinions of a lot of Reaper paint users. For instance I\'m not personally listing the liner colours in my top faves, but loads of Reaper paint users swear by them.

If your goal is to get a few sample paints to try from different brands to see what you\'d like, my suggestion for Reaper is to try some of the skin tones. The tanned flesh grouping is a little cold for what it\'s named (but nice otherwise), and the fair skin is very fair, but aside from those points I consider them the most natural colours and ready to go colour-wise out of the pot of the paints I\'ve tried.

Reaper has a very nice selection of browns and greens, from very natural muted tones to more classic fantasy intense hues. I consider the browns and greens to be a big strength of the range, but from what I\'ve seen VMC has no lack of greens either. The must-have browns I\'d suggest are Walnut, Oiled Leather and Shield Brown. Green\'s my favourite colour, so it\'s harder for me to just suggest a few of those. ;-> There are several colours you could build nice autumn paint schemes out of also.

the bone triad (which is a grayed brown)
saffron sunset

the ivory triad (which is bleached bone and darker and lighter versions)
teal triad 1 - deep ocean, marine teal, surf aqua
teal triad 2 - stormy sea, clouded sea, seafoam blue
indigo sky, pale indigo
mossy greens - jungle moss, highlands moss, pale lichen

My favorites from the Reaper Master Series are:

• Brown Liner
• Blue Liner
• Walnut Brown
• Oiled Leather
• Leather Brown
• Off-Whites Triad
• Bone Triad
• Iovry Bone Triad
• Medium (Tanned) Skin Triad

The liners are particularly good to get. There are 6: pick the ones that will complement what you are painting.

Walnut Brown is a very, very, very dark brown that works wonderfully as a warm black.

The skin triads from the Reaper line are very good, and I recommend getting several from the various skin tones (Fair, Medium, Rosy, Golden, and Dark).

Any other colors depend on what you are painting. For example, I use a lot of the Boodthirsday Reds and Olive Green triads, but then again, I\'m painting a lot of orcs.

@Generapoleaxe. Thanks for the offer but unfortunately I\'m not going to GD due to my continuing helth issues. I still have some of the really old GW paints, though probably only about 3 or 4 colours left, and a few of the inks which were sold as the Advanced Paint Set.

@Wren and DaRat Thanks for the input. I\'ll have to see what I can afford but I will definately try the browns. The more the merrier to give some variety for my skaven, I think. The flesh tones will probably come in handy for my inquisitor and retinue and for the wood elves. Probably also for the dba armies, which are most likely going to be Parthians and Early India.
