Reboot 2013

Well, the biggest thing to remember is when applying sealer, it sends the pigment darker. So after about 10-20 minutes, she's dry to the touch but it takes about an hour for me to see what color she's really going to be. So here's what I had to do.

This pigments applied but NOT sealed. I can't find my raw umber, that would be the best cool tone to add right now. Any siennas or ochers are generally too warm.

So I used Slate Gray - I don't like the color but it's a good neutralizer and it helps soften other pigments so you don't get BLUE instead of cool when applying the next color.

The next color I applied (no sealing because I don't want a lot of pigment sticking in this particular case) was from a new company that approached me last year about testing their pigments and perhaps even a sponsorship. The last I heard from them was they were waiting for their ASTM cert so they could sell the stuff - they got approved in Dec and nothin'. Website hasn't changed and FB page stayed the same.

So...the color I used was theirs Cobalt Turquoise.

Okay, first understand the photos on Earth Pigments are close but never 100%. And the color calibration of your monitor is going to be different from mine. So, looking at it, I'd say the color is close to Mayan Mineral Blue with just a touch more green. The Turquios EP has is too green - this is very "aqua."

Okay so like I said we have above color - no sealer. Take my handy dandy Testors Dull Coat and here we go.

On my screen the photo is much redder than the model IRL but I have no idea how y'all are seeing it. After the family interrupting me a billion times, I now know the color - needs more cool tones.

Back soon with more pics!

Oh and next post I'll list the colors up to this point.

I am thinking of starting one. I have a blog, a family and a list of projects a mile long to paint, but God help me I am seriously thinking of starting a WIP thread here ~sigh~ Damn you people. You inspire me so - damn you all to hell ;)

You are like the luckiest lady here. I think i would pluck out an eye for Huma's silver dragon. The Black dragon 2 and his sorceress are wonderful mini's i have those and most of the dragon 2 range. Back when those first came out, i thought they were some of the best at that time. Some fond memories painting those in High school.

The lone ranger looks like a really fun mini! I think you are going to do wonders on that one. Those pegaso models look nice. I have only one. It looks like Mel gibson from braveheart and it was the BEST metal model i have ever put together from any company so far. One mold line to file and all the parts fit perfectly. Hope those are as good for you.

I've painted the clothed version of that sophie and i have the naughty version but it went through a flash bath before it was packaged. I was kinda bad so i never got back to her.

I have almost bought that Elf Assassin about 50 times. I have most of the other ORI elves and every one of the ORI kits are fantastic! Very little clean up or prep work on the ones i got. Yours is looking fabulous.

I have been practicing pigments but i have been scraping them from chalks. I will be watching your vids when my work rotation is over.

Congratulations btw on your Vegas book show! I can only imagine how excited you were when they called. Hope you have a blast while your there, and remember to take some time to relax while your there.

Hey, it's fun, motivating, and folks here give great advice. You'll love it...and of course it's not like we're giving you links to websites like www.e2046.com if you're a fan of anime or like larger scales....or anything like that. ;)

Kath--the last posts Picts look a bit grainy.

I'm fighting my camera tooth and nail. Since I got my new laptop my camera is showing it's age. It's always had trouble with noise and now it's even worse. Plus, I've been trying to get my screen calibrated properly but can't find the website where I did it years ago with my old laptop. The Win 7 calibration isn't giving me a lot.

That being said - doing my best to fix the noise. ;)

In fact, I was editing the new photos last night when I dozed off in the middle of everything. lol!

Okay I left off at adding a cool tone to her skin. Now, I'm not very familiar with the new brand of pigments, and I knew better than to use them but I did anyway (first lesson, don't break your own rules. haha!) When I originally purchased my Earth Pigments I was painting horses, so no real need for bright blues, greens and so on. So I definitely need to get some from EP.

And as I said before, it's hard to predict how dark pigments will go (especially working with an unfamiliar brand). So...elf lady went really dark this time around.

BUT it was a happy mistake. I think the color quality is very rich.

Okay my lighting is a little off in these pics (I think). On my screen, her color is more like the second photo. She's definitely ethnic...I think of it like a Storm from Xmen look. lol! So I'm going to keep it. I do want to hit it with one more layer of my regular flesh colored pigment.

I need to get some pigments and paints slapped down and go over my notes on colors I applied. Back soon!

Maybe she's a half breed between a drow and elf? anyway you cut it looks great. Crap, another mini co. God there are so many i want minis from since i pulled my head out of GW's arse o_O and started to look around. I have my eye on Chun li from street fighter and a few of the resident evil and sailor moon characters, not to mention the dog from okami; Amataratsu (The Lady Inquisitor - aka the wife - is huge fan and would get a kick out of me painting them up) Ack no! what am i doing?! Finish what you start. Finish what you start... finish what.... youuuooooo- shiny!

Must have new shiney! :hypnotized:

Honestly though, we really don't have any gamers in my area so I just paint. But that means I don't have to worry about armies. If I like the sculpt then I buy it. Of course that means I've got too many as it is and trying NOT to buy more. ARGH!

Okay updates. Still hard to tell from the crappy photos but she's improving. I went back with my original base color and it did lighten her, so I'm going with one more layer of that.

I popped off her right leg at the hip so had to reglue - gonna have to fill the gap but I should be able to match the color with thinned acrylics. I've done it before several times on model horse repairs.

I've been promising a "recipe" for y'all - so here goes.

Every layer is apply with a stiff nylon brush and the pigments are literally scrubbed on so they stain the model then I follow with a light layer of sealer - Testors Dull Coat.

First two layers: Earth Pigments (EP) Clay Brown
Highlight Chromium Mars Yellow and Shading Burnt Sienna
Cool tone layer EP Pewter Gray plus Chromium Cobalt Turquiose
Cobalt Turquiose by itself
Back again to EP Clay Brown

And that's about it - the most time consuming is just making sure the sealer is dry.

Okay - more work to do - back soon!

Yay! I put a total of two layers of Clay Brown, the original base color, then started on the corset. It's a combination of acrylics and pigments applied with color shapers. Not complete yet, still have to do more highlighting and cleanup. But that should be done tomorrow...maybe. I'll probably pick up work on the face and start on the arms - the fun part is getting them to match. lol! Anyway, hope y'all like her.

lol! My son is 17. They'll probably be great pals and I'd have an even bigger mess in the kitchen than I do now.

I can't wait to see what ya think of the models when they arrive.

Oh this is not good. After all of this work, I had put her arms and head in a ziplock bag to wait until I was ready to work on them. Grabbed the bag last night - no head.

Uh...hrrrmmm...okay...let's see if I can distract the guys with a video I created to sum up what I've done the past year, as well as promote interest in the pigments.

Yeah - keep up with this one boys (and girls lol!)

Dang it! So much for the slight of hand.

Okay well, I made some progress cleaning up the disaster my kitty cat left me.

Some of ya may remember this little...uh...okay 18lbs is not little.

She's gotten into my stuff before and nearly lost one or two of her nine lives.

But Whiskers is getting very close to being renamed Dozer.

I have my stuff on the table and packed away underneath it. She doesn't care if its in the way, she plows right through and knocks it off, tears up the stuff I had closed up in boxes (she's got thumbs too). Anyway, she had my stuff in such a disaster I was absolutely dreading this. But managed to get it half-way cleaned up before my back gave out on me. Hopefully will finish today.

But as to the afore mentioned missing head. I think Dozer was not actually to blame this time but one orange and white tabby.

Tigger is much more concerned if I'm mad at him or not giving him enough attention. You know it's the end of the world if Mom unexpectedly leaves the room. Anyway, if he thought I was paying too much attention to the model - he might have batted that ole head right under the bed...trying to hit the black hole.

Hopefully I can make progress today.

Ah Kath, in your video at the begining, did the dragon/wryn explode as your logo busted though/out of its scaly body?

Actually, you know, that sounds kinda badassed =)

Ten books huh? That's pretty productive, plan on sleeping any time soon?
