I guess it's appropriate that my name can be shortened to Kat, because the Kat keeps coming back when you think she's a gonner. I'm bascially every cliche you can think of, a bomerang, a bad penny that you can't get rid of. (Does anyone hear the Jaws theme playing or is it just me?
I mgiht as well face it, as long as I'm writing for a living, there are going to be times when the painting slides from hobby, to throw good money after bad into the money pit because I'll never be able to pain all of this stuff, and ultimately to "honey, I was sure we owned a kitchen table at one point in time, but now I can't find it anywhere. What do you mean it broke under the weight of all the hobby supplies and metal miniatures?"
hehe... so let me apologize now because I know if I start painting again, and then a writing deadline hits and it's crunch time, the models go back on the table and I turn into a cyber-hermit for months/years at a time.
And it's been over a year since I picked up a paint brush. So, the miniatures in this thread are basically just as I left them. (If I can actually get some forward momentum and start painting, at least I can pick up where I left off.
Who am I kidding? My hand tremors are 10 x worse! I haven't touched a brush in a year, there's no way I'm going to pick up and jump right in to painting that tartan for example.
This definitely calls for a good warm up plan. I learned my lesson from last time - will start with pigments and larger scales as "warm up" pieces and just see how it goes. As long as I'm not trying to paint for a living, commission, or contest, I can relax and take it slowly. But then I get bored and have to challenge myself, bite off more than I can chew, then the minis sit and wait again.
All I'll do is try and see what happens.

Welcome back! It's not what you paint or how much, but that you paint which matters 
Writing is a challenge, but writing to a deadline is brutal. Just enjoy whatever painting time you have and keep a pen and paper handy to note ideas as they come. Mine tend to hit me when doing yellows - or on the epiphany toilet, as I have dubbed the basement one

Hi Zab! Thank you! While I absolutely love what I do now (I enjoyed the office jobs I had in the past - but there's a big difference between liking your job and haiving a passion about what you do - it has really changed my outlook and even how I react to stressful situations), I think a lot of it is the focus and intensity it requires. In a sense, painting requires the same thing, so I think it has a tendency to divide my attention. But I'll definitely keep trying to figure out the balancing act.
Yellows huh? Now that you mention it, mine is reds.

Thanks Frank! You're the one who kinda pushed me into eyeballing the stack of minis on the table from hell in the first place. So I thought I'd come here for moral support since it's downright scary! And seeing how much improvement you've made in your painting - how can one NOT be inspired by that???
But I do have to finish this fight I've got going with this formatting issue. Hopefully I can get that done tonight.
Stew and I were chatting via PM about trying a buddy painting project - you know both start projects and when one of us loses focus the other is there to encourage. I say the more the merrier - I'm wanting to go with a monster or something larger scale as a warm up, so if anyone has a big beastie they've been putting off, maybe think about grabbing it. We'll get a couple folks and start our own thread.

So sorry! That was due to me trying to reorganize my photobucket - hah! That's another thing on the to do list than seems to fall lower on the priority list. But here's a link to my Photobucket miniatures album. There are a TON of subalbums that actually have the majority of photos that are better and they're all public so don't be afraid to dig around if ya want.
My biggest things are painting horses, painting with dry pigments (and other mediums that might be considered "unorthodox" to say the least. hehe!), and stuff like that. I do have a couple of tutorials on my YouTube channel too.

One of the biggest things about the folks on this forum is that they are absolutely great about helping. When you put minis in their gallery for voting, you honestly never know what you're going to get in regard to feedback. Following an abstract number rating can get frustrating to say the least. And there are the trolls who make the occasional drive by comment that's mean spirited and offers no help. But on the forums it's not like that. Of course you might get the occasional troll, but for the most part the people here are great, absolutely helpful, and I really like the unique insights they offer. So don't be afraid to post those pics, having another pair of eyes looking at something can go a long way to help improvement. I know it helps me!
Okay peeps - keep your fingers crossed that I got the formatting issues worked out. The file just finished downloading so I gotta proof it. Back soon!

Well, we'll see - I swear the dark forces align whenever I come visit CMON.
The formatting issues I thought I had solved... well, they weren't... not even close.
I ended up spending the past two days in a crash course (and crash is not an exaggeration) learning Adobe Indesign publishing software from the ground up. Damn my brains are mush! It was tough because the program is so vast. The big print companies use this stuff but more and more small press and freelancers are switching to it.
I had been stuck using Word. Now Office 2010 I had nailed down and I had my templates and styles all set. Well, when my computer died and I had to get a new one with Windows 8.1, for some strange reason my product code for 2010 didn't just stop working - it was absolutely invalid and should have never worked. Yeah, sure, whatever.
Anyway, I had to switch to Office 2013 subscription. I HATE it. None of my stuff works right. I have to redo everything and it seems like Word goes behind my back and alters files after I've logged off.
So, I thought I'd try InDesign since I'm a creative cloud member and it's part of the bundle. HUGE learning curve because it's so complex but Adobe has seriously done a lot with the work flow. I can use many of the styles I made in my old Word 2010 program. Not all of them translate but more than I expected did. Plus I can make templates indesign and use them in Word. (But if everything keeps going, Word will get the boot! lo!)
The sad thing is I only got three chapters formatted so far - but hey, I got drop caps! lol! Seriously you can't tell the difference between my stuff and a big imprint. The longest part is setting up the styles initially, once those are all lined out - it's insanely easy to do. So I only have a couple more to tweak and it should be downhill the rest of the way.
Since I had a little room to breathe - I thought I'd better skeddaddle over here. It's seriously short notice but I'm going to The Houston Con this weekend. The folks from Star Trek Axanar project are going to go be there. They're Kickstarter is doing great. I couldn't believe they're doing all of this indie. Gotta go network. They not only have some indie author there along with other stuff - I just found out they have GAMING!
And they have Warmachine damn it! I've got a ton of unpainted Warmachine minis staring at me. (Kat eyeballs calendar, eyeballs minis. Damn!) I might attend a game if I can but ain't no way i'm taking unpainted minis.
Plus - I just got me a nice little present of a bunch of Rackham minis. *sigh* The stack goes even higher.
So - maybe I could at least scare a couple of minis with paintbrush.

Checked out star trek Axanar. That looks very impressive. Backed that one

Too cool! I'd love to but I've got other stuff - besides at San Diego Comic Con, Richard Hatch was talking about doing an indie reboot of Battlestar Gallactica.
I liked the BG new series mainly because I thought it was well written and they really did a lot with character and story arc. But I didn't like the swap ups of the old characters - I thought they should have gone with a complete reboot. But it will be interesting to see if anything comes of it.
