reccommend some MOVIES for me!

This is another part of my journey of self discovery. For those of you that didn\'t take part in the music thread here is an explaination of what\'s going on;

I don\'t really know what type of movies I like. I know what I\'ve watched over the last almost 30 years, but those chioces were never mine. I never got to buy the dvd\'s or choose the films we went to see. I did study costum design in college before I (stupidly) dropped out to get married. So I\'m asking all of you to reccommend some movies for me to watch so I can make up my mind what I, myself, and no one else, likes. Tell me where to start and what the best movies and actors are in your opinion. I\'ll go watch them and then buy the stuff I like. I might even let you in on what I\'ve chosen.

One word on what I\'ve seen.........most of the movies that I\'ve watched are action adventure and horror. Reccommend these if you want but I\'ve probably seen most of them. I haven\'t watched any foreign films outside of japanese samurai movies and chop saki movies so I\'d love to get your thoughts on those. Forget the porn. Been there, done that, not interested at the moment.

Anyway, again I have to say thanks for the help with the music and thanks in advance for help here! You guys rock!
:D

A few movies that I really like:

The Princess Bride
13th Warrior
Mirrormask
Shaun of the Dead (but you\'ve probably seen it)
Hot Fuzz
Firefly (ok,it\'s a TV series, but still great)/Serenity
Blazing Saddles
Spaceballs
Diggstown
The Fifth Element

Have you watched/do you like anime? If so, talk to Duende as she\'s an anime freak.

Undave

Flockwit
The Hunt for Red October and the Blues Brothers are my two fave movies of all time.:D

Some other stuff though:

51st state is good for a laugh.
Beowulf and Grendel is much better than the CGI thing with that Jolie woman in it.
Bill Bailey does some good stand up comedy DVDs.
The Shawshank Redemption was surprisingly good.
Mess up your head with Pink Floyd\'s The Wall.
Circus is a great crime caper if you can keep up with the plot.
Pans Labyrinth is a fantastic Spanish language film.
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back..... lol

Edit: Rocky Horror Picture show FTW lol lol lol

Also therse series are worth watching

Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes,
Hustle,
League of Gentlemen,
Coupling,
Black Books,
Father Ted.

If you\'re planning on seeing a lot of movies I\'d suggest subscribing to one of these online rental services. Depending on your package you can rent as many DVDs as you like in a month, the only restriction being how many you have at any one time. All you do when you\'ve finished with them is pop them in the post and they send you the next lot out. They\'ll also recommend movies to you based on the ratings you give the ones you\'ve previously rented. The fact that I have a big stack of blank DVDRs in my desk draw has nothing to do with this whatsoever :innocent:

Some interesting horror suspense movies:

The Cube is a good one. There is also Cube Zero and Cube 2: Hypercube. They are unique and pretty good.

If you like gorey horror flicks look up movies by the production company Troma. They are the people who made Toxic Avenger which was made into an animated cartoon called Toxic Crusaders in the early 90\'s. Also by Troma: Blood Sucking Freaks, Terror Firmer, Mothers Day, Nuk\'em High, Cannibal the Musical, Surf Naxi\'s Must Die, the list by them goes on. Check out their website or go to Movie boutiques to find more from them.

Ichi the Killer is good.

The sci fi horror Event Horizon is excellent, creepy and gorey. Predator but I am sure you have seen this. Critters is fun comedy horror.

Adventure movies: Brave Little Toaster (my favorite!!!), Adventures in Babysitting...

That is all I can think of off the top of my head but if I think of any more I will post again. I have a large collection of B horror films and I will take a look through them and let you know what you may like.

Just a kind of side-suggestion: if you\'re going to start watching a bunch of movies, you might want to look at joining Netflix (if you aren\'t a member already).

It\'s a pretty good deal (at least it has been for me). For about $18 a month, you get three movies out at a time and no limit to how many you watch in a month. It\'s by mail, so there is a bit of turn around, but you can also watch some movies and TV shows on their website for free if you have an unlimited plan.

They also have other plans where you can have even more out at a time, but the price gets pretty steep past the 3-at-a-time plan.

Just a thought.

Cool.

And it seems that the recommendations are flowing in pretty fast. Wonder if showing your \"bruises\" has anything to do with that...

lol

(for those of you that might not get it, that\'s just a joke )

You have said you have seen Japanese samurai flicks, but they are some of my favourites so i will just put down my top three of them to round out my list
Seven Samurai
Ran
Lone Wolf and Cub

A couple of other Japanese movies that i love. Takeshi Kitano made the first two and they are so striking. Sad and funny in equal measure.
Hanabi
Summer of Kikujiro (or just Kikujiro)
Drive
Afterlife (this is my wife\'s favorite movie)

Out of Japanese animation, i would say that \"Only Yesterday\" is my favorite. No sex. No monsters. No fighting. Just a story.

As for TV series to watch, I would recommend Prison Break, The Unit, Jericho and The West Wing.

well I just renterd a few this weekend.

10,000 BC sucked Monkey Nuts..

A Indy called In Bruges was fantastic. Stars Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Finnes.

Another great Indy is King of California staring Michael Douglas.

I rather go with director:

Terrence Malick:

Don\'t expect genre films from him, they all are very philosophical, since he studied psychology and was a great fan of Heidegger and Wittgenstein:

The Thin Red Line
The New World

Asian Films::

Wong Kar Wai:
His cameraman (Canadian) is a genius, sorry forgot name. This films are a dream of colour and composition. Very slow going and romantical (most):

Chungking Express
In The Mood For Love
My Blueberry Nights

Akira Kurosawa:

Some good ones that are not that famous:

Ikiru (Live one time!?)
Sanjuro (the film last man standing is based on)
Kumonosu-jô (Throne of Blood)

other great film he made script:

Umi wa miteita (The Sea is Watching)

Other not so famous directors from asian cinema:

SABU: Unlucky Monkey, Monday, Blessing Bell

Films I don\'t know director:

Memories of Matsuko
I\'m a Cyborg. But that\'s OK

Back to Australian Horror (Fun?) Genre:

The old Peter Jackson Films:

Braindead, Meet the Feebles, Bad Taste

You never believe he did Lord of the Rings after you have watched these films. They are so much B-Movie that they are brilliant again...and very funny

:bouncy: So do I.

I have to second The Crow, pure awesomeness. Just be sure to watch the first movie starring Brandon Lee, the sequels are horrible.

Other good ones I\'ve seen recently:

Pan\'s Labyrinth
Fear and loathing in Las Vegas
Requiem for a Dream
Fight Club
Snatch
Twelve Monkeys
Sin City
V for Vendetta
28 days later
28 weeks later
Battle Royale

The list would be pretty much endless if I started to list all movies that are worth watching so I\'ll stop here.

Ok so most of the guys haven\'t really read what Liz said as she stated that her \"viewing diet\" had included mainly Action /Horror and wanted a change.

So here\'s a few differing ones:

The Bridge to Terabithia (Absolutley superb movie, aimed at kids but just so good)
Ferris Bueller\'s day off (20 years old....No way.)
Under a Tuscan Sky (Liz might just relate to that. oh and watch Diane Lane\'s hand in the love scene. ;) lol)
Notting Hill
Love Actually
Wimbledon
Much Ado About Nothing (Kenneth Branagh\'s take on Shakespeare)
Ladyhawke
One Fine Day
The Forgotten (underrated and extremely tense)
The Gift
Missing
The Brave One (man was I surprised at how good this was)

Oh and add into that list the BBC version of Pride and Predjudice With Jennifer Erhle and Colin Firth.............ignore the ego riddled version with Keira Knightly.

Ok two things here. Thin red line should have been retitled \"Much Ado about Nothing\". It was painfull to sit through. Malick is a great director, but that movie was bad.

And although Australians are happy to claim anything from this area as their own, Peter jackson is a New Zealander. Much like most of \"our\" talent. Russell Crowe, Sam Neill, Crowded House, Phar Lap. The list goes on.
