Here\'s a list in no particular order.

Amelie
Ghostworld
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Spirited Away
The Corpse Bride
The Incredibles
Shine
Audition (okay, that one\'s a horror but as you say, recommend if I want)
Babylon 5 (tv series although there are some film, too, but I wouldn\'t watch them out of order as they tend to fit in somewhere alongside the series)
American Beauty
Donnie Darko

I am going to recommend some Hong Kong films here. The 2 below are the absolute best came out in these several years:

Shaolin Soccer (comedy)
&
Infernal Affairs (which \"The Departed\" is based on, but i think the original is way better)

If you are into Shaolin Soccers\' comedy style, you can watch the guy\'s earlier movies.

Also, try some old Jackie Chan & Chow Yun Fat\'s movies, way better than what they are doing in Hollywood

Like Dragonsreach pointed out we shoud not recomend typical \"guys movies\" since she had her share of that already ;-)

heres a small list of films that I realy like and don`t fall into the mentioned category:

edward scissorhands -starring young mr. depp and winona ryder, an all-time classic

blue velvet -one of david lynches more understandable -but still pretty weird- films and a good point to start with.

secretary -the only sensitive and tasteful film about bdsm that I have ever encountered. Maggie Gyllenhaal (from the new batman) acts realy good in this one.

Being John Malcovic -an intelligent yet funny film about mind exchange.

A Very Long Engagement -a touching film about a disabled girl who searches for her fiancée who has gone missing in WWI

Fizl

Secret Crocodile
I have to say Amelie too - my favorite film!

Wedding Singer
My neighbours the Yamada\'s
Children of men
Zatoichi
Grave of the Fireflies
Bridget Jones\'s diary
City of lost children

I have many 100\'s films so once you start working out what you like let me know :)

So i have one very concerned question to ask..... why has nobody mentioned animal house or national lampoons family vacation??? A few others are The Thing, hamburger hill, saving private ryan, castaway, and if you are in the mood for a rock infused gory action flick i heavily recommend Doomsday i just really enjoyed that one :p (i know even though it is probably aimed towards guys :( )

Another amazing not so guy aimed movie is Seven years in tibet....

@Yamrag: Sorry, I was not sure about Peter Jackson. So the glory goes to New Zealand for that movies!

And one point on Thin Red Line, which is my favourite movie. I didn\'t like in in cinemas too. It was released at the time when films like that bloody Saving Private Ryan came out. So everyone was expecting a war movie.
Its defintely no war movie. It does take place during WWII, but its a philosphical film for me. It always makes me thing and gives me inspiration. So I guess I watched it over 20 times...stopped to count. Haven\'t seen any other movie that often. And its also a reason I recommended it to Liz, cause its NO action movie!!!

Thought about other great movies:

Waking Life (animated on real film)
Basquiat

These films are also very inspirational. Don\'t expect Popcorn movies though.

Oh liz, Here are some more films. They are romance/comedy/drama movies from Korea. Korean romance always has that little twist in it that make it enjoyable. Click the name to go to the Amazon page:

My Sassy Girl
Lovers\' Concerto (my favorite)
The Classic
&
il Mare

And for a little silliness. You can also try Volcano High. It\'s about some supernatural fighters in highschool setting. (Don\'t ask me the Snoop Dog/rappers cover on Amazon ??? )

The Magnificent Seven (Western)
Casablanca
Roman Holiday
Breakfast at Tiffany\'s
The Day The Earth Stood Still
Plan Nine From Outer Space (It\'s Ed Wood. You\'ll die laughing at how bad it is.)

Animation movies I\'ve enjoyed...

The Last Unicorn
Wizards
Toy Story (1 and 2)
A Bug\'s Life
The Incredibles

There\'s lots more.

I just have to say again that The X-Files is a truly awesome tv show. Tv guide says its the 2nd best cult show (star trek is first- also awesome) and 37th best tv show ever. In fact, I\'m about to go watch it now unless thats my White Dwarf that just came in the mail.

I knew I forgot to add something to the list. I agree on the Three Colours trilogy.

EDIT: The original Spanish version of vanilla Sky was better but I can\'t remember the title.

Really? Didn\'t know there was an original Spanish version. I will have to keep an eye out for that. As my wife says I \"have a thing for F\'ed up Foreign Films\". I know my collection has a few more Jems but nothing else springs to mind at the moment. There\'s the one with the little kid trying to find a woman with breast milk as good as his dead mothers, that was good, but I can\'t remember the name for the life of me.
