Wow... you\'ve got so many recommendations here already. I\'ll keep my list short. If you see any of them and like the gist, I can recommend more of the same.
1) Miller\'s Crossing - My favorite movie of all time. Coen Brothers film starring Gabriel Byrne. It\'s a wonderful prohibition-era gangster tale. A little dark, like most Coen Brothers\' movies, but also shares their quirky humor.
2) Million Dollar Baby - I think the only thing I\'ve seen on stage, big screen or television that can compare to the emotional highs and lows of this film is Wicked, the broadway musical. And this movie is NOTHING like Wicked. I recommend watching it alone, uninterrupted, and with a bottle of wine.
3) The Usual Suspects - A Bryan Singer masterpiece starring Kevin Spacey. It\'s a who-done-it from a very unusual perspective.
4) The Truth About Cats and Dogs - While not the iconic chick-flick like When Harry Met Sally, this is a fun romance that isn\'t on network television three times a year. Plus, I like Janeane Garofalo and her sarcastic wit.
5) Ravenous - This is a quirky, character-driven film set somewhere around civil war-ish era. It stars Guy Pierce and is worth a watch for the sound track and the scenery (filmed mostly in Slovakia) alone. Oh yeah... and it\'s about cannibalism.
6) Snatch - Someone already recommended this one, but I\'ll second it. Who knew anything good would come out of Guy Ritchie? Fun flick with very high re-watch value. Oh... and you get plenty of Brad Pitt with his shirt off.
Ok... I could go on and on but I better stop. I will add a closing note, though. DR recommended Under The Tuscan Sun. If you watch the movie, promise me that you\'ll read the book, too. It\'s an amazingly wonderful book that shares not much more than a name with the movie. That said, the movie is a cute love story with a bit of unnecessary social commentary taking place in a gorgeous setting. Also, they go to great lengths to get Diane Lane in her underwear as much as possible so if you watch it with a guy they\'ll have something to look forward to.
