Wow... you\'ve got so many recommendations here already. I\'ll keep my list short. If you see any of them and like the gist, I can recommend more of the same.

1) Miller\'s Crossing - My favorite movie of all time. Coen Brothers film starring Gabriel Byrne. It\'s a wonderful prohibition-era gangster tale. A little dark, like most Coen Brothers\' movies, but also shares their quirky humor.

2) Million Dollar Baby - I think the only thing I\'ve seen on stage, big screen or television that can compare to the emotional highs and lows of this film is Wicked, the broadway musical. And this movie is NOTHING like Wicked. I recommend watching it alone, uninterrupted, and with a bottle of wine.

3) The Usual Suspects - A Bryan Singer masterpiece starring Kevin Spacey. It\'s a who-done-it from a very unusual perspective.

4) The Truth About Cats and Dogs - While not the iconic chick-flick like When Harry Met Sally, this is a fun romance that isn\'t on network television three times a year. Plus, I like Janeane Garofalo and her sarcastic wit.

5) Ravenous - This is a quirky, character-driven film set somewhere around civil war-ish era. It stars Guy Pierce and is worth a watch for the sound track and the scenery (filmed mostly in Slovakia) alone. Oh yeah... and it\'s about cannibalism.

6) Snatch - Someone already recommended this one, but I\'ll second it. Who knew anything good would come out of Guy Ritchie? Fun flick with very high re-watch value. Oh... and you get plenty of Brad Pitt with his shirt off.

Ok... I could go on and on but I better stop. I will add a closing note, though. DR recommended Under The Tuscan Sun. If you watch the movie, promise me that you\'ll read the book, too. It\'s an amazingly wonderful book that shares not much more than a name with the movie. That said, the movie is a cute love story with a bit of unnecessary social commentary taking place in a gorgeous setting. Also, they go to great lengths to get Diane Lane in her underwear as much as possible so if you watch it with a guy they\'ll have something to look forward to.

@Jike, yeah as much as Australians want to claim New Zealand triumphs as their own (and we do) Peter Jackson and his insane genius will always be regarded as a New Zealander. He has no pretence of trying to be an Aussie. Also i am not a fan of War movies trying to be something more than a war movie. The most i will allow is something like Platoon, Full Metal Jacket or Saving Private Ryan. Most hated however are the War/Love films. Enemy at the Gates and In Love and War are possibly the worst two. Enemy at the Gates was good, but i felt the love story was tacked on to get more women go to see it.

Oh and just to point out, the movies i have recommended are ones that my wife has enjoyed as well. Here are some more.
Mad Max 1 and 2 (from when Australia didn\'t make crap movies)
Michael Clayton
Salvador
Any Given Sunday
Gandhi
The Last Samurai (which is a good Tom Cruise movie and is only spoilt by the inclusion of Tom Cruise)
Shogun (based on the James Clavell novel)

lollollol
And Ken Watanabe\'s performance overshadows Cruise\'s, by a lot. Tom chose the wrong supporting cast, if you know what I mean ;)

I don\'t know...

Tom Cruise has proven himself to be a competent actor. His actions outside of his films are just misleading and seem to detract from what talent he has (which is more than Cruise gets credit for).

Really? ?????????
I can\'t think of a single Tom Cruise movie where i have thought he has done a good job. The most believable role he has done was in Magnolia (that\'s a good movie Lizcam) when he was the slimy/sleazy self help guru.

Here are some films I really liked that people have already suggested - but they are good so I am listing them again (in no particular order) as I think you could really like them.

Big Fish
Amelie
Ferris Bueller\'s Day Off Thanks DR for reminding me of this, it\'s a great fun film).

These following films I think are great and I don\'t think anyone has suggested them yet.

The Big Lebowski If it is your sort of humour then it is incredibly funny. Written by the Coen brothers.

You mentioned you haven\'t seen many foreign films and I think this is a good one.

Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run in English) I just thought it was so clever and fast paced, and such a neat idea.

Hope some of that helps, have fun!

If you\'re a fan of Terry Pratchett books:

The Hogfather

P.S.: There\'s also the Spanish original version of \"Pan\'s Labyrinth\", which is way better than the English or German. The voice for Pan just fits perfectly!

Thought of a good likable movie:
\"A Good Year\" starring Russell Crowe and Marion Cotillard directed by Ridley Scott.
It\'s somewhat similar in feel to \"Under a Tuscan Sun\", but has some superb really funny scene\'s regarding the Anglo-French relationship.
The UK version of the DVD has several tracks of Russell Crowe\'s band playing, which is not too shabby.

Also a likeable lightweight \"Rom-Com\" is The Holiday. Kate Winslett is superb in the Telephone scene. (And not to hard on the eyes either).
