Hi,

I\'m looking for a good recipe for blond hair using Vallejo model color pigments.

Any suggestions?

This is a recipe given to me by Bhop, which gives a great natural looking blonde hair colour:

Hi, saw your comment about the hair on my Celeborn figure. (Citadel colors) Basically I used Graveyard Earth for a base, then highlighted it with a mixture of Elf Flesh and Skull White, and later with a very light yellow mix sparingly. Painted in some shadows with brown ink. All of the highlights and shading are done with small hairlike strokes. hope this helps thanks, bhop

As you can see, this is Citadel colours, but I\'m sure the equivalents are out there on a chart somewhere (I only know the Game colour conversion chart). This recipe gives the hair colour shown on this figure Celeborn

hope that helps,

Shaz

Yah, but most of the recipes were based on Citadel/GW paints, which I don\'t have.

I was looking for Vallejo model color recipes if anyone had them. (I did note Dragonreach\'s suggestion though.)

Basically its all about yellows and light browns. \"Blonde\" hair ranges from light brown to white, so you can use pretty much anything you want in the brown, yellow and white paint range. Add a little red to the brown to get strawberry blonde (don\'t add it to the yellow, you\'ll just get orange). I would stay away from orangy yellows, I\'ve been using lemon yellow and that seems good, but its the only vallejo of those shades I have so I can\'t be specific about colours.

Well, I can only make things worse, since I use Apple Barrel Craft paints, but here we go -

I start with a base coat of Parchment, then go to either Pineapple or Yellow, depending upon how yellow a blonde I am going for - followed by a wash with either Burnt Sierra for a more reddish cast or just strait black for the shadows.

gold

I can\'t remember where I read this so I can\'t give proper credit but -
Add a tiny amount of metalic gold paint to your hair colors. It really brings out a shine similar to natural hair.
Come to think of it this was on how to paint red hair, but it still should work. For platinum blonde you may want platinum (or silver) paint.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Adding some metallics is an interesting idea. Vincegamer, do you have any examples of how the hair looks when you do that?

Well, now that you mention it, I realize I still haven\'t put my Chick Challenge mini up on CMON.
Until then, there is this picture of a red-head:

It\'s not my best photography, and I sold the mini so can\'t get a better shot. If you look at the bottom picture, you can tell near the crest of her head that there is a \"healthy shine\" to the hair.

Nice! :)

I was afraid that it would look too metallic, but the effect is nice and subtle.

Will try it out next chance I get!

I\'ve used VMCs to do blonde. Unfortunately, I don\'t have any pictures, and those models are gone (commission).

Anyway, here\'s what I remember:

1. Primed white.
2. Yellow Ochre at about 1:4, paint:water ratio washed over hair.
3. Smoke over the hair (really thin, about 1:6).
4. Pick out some areas with Yellow Ochre.
5. Add some Ivory to the Yellow Ochre, and highlight a bit.

The key here is making sure you don\'t highlight too abrubtly, or the model will look like they got a dye job, and their roots are showing. ;)

For most of my blondes, I start with a Vomit Brown, adding white for highlighting or Ivory and glazing with various yellows, mostly my favorite is Deep Yellow. To get the deeper shadows I might put in some Camo Black Brown or Beige Brown, sometimes mixing them with the Vomit and sometimes not. Don\'t be afraid to just play with it!

Perfect example would be one of the Dark Sword miniatures I did. I used a glaze of Deep Yellow over the Vomit brown and the Ivory, with Camo Black Brown mixed with Vomit for the deeper recesses.

Hmmm, it\'s the Vomit Brown we need the equivalent for...if I happen to get to the store this week, I\'ll see if anything fits...

I have a couple of recipes I usually use for blond hair... for a \"golden\" blonde like this one:
http://www.coolminiornot.com/?id=30956

Basecoat with Vallejo Goldbrown 877 and add Vallejo Beige 917 for the highlight. At the end you can add some \"extreme\" highlight with Vallejo Pale Sand 837.

For a \"white\" blonde like this one:
Mordheim hero

basecoat with Vallejo Beige 917 + a small part of Vallejo olive green 967 + a small part of Vallejo Beige brown 875
Highlight adding Vallejo beige to the mix.

mini-goddess: GW Vomit Brown seems a lighter version of Vallejo orange brown 981.
A good equivalent seems the Vallejo light brown 929 but I can compare this one only on the color chart and not with the real one.

Thanks, DP! I\'ll check those colors out...unfortunately I know the shop is out of the orange brown...I\'ve been asking for it for weeks now. :(

Stay away from the bright yellows...If you have to use them tone them down...by adding white and greys and browns...

My favorite color for blonde is:Vallejo Game Color - Plague Brown 039/Vallejo Model Color - Yellow Ochre 913/ GW - Bubonic Brown

Where I use GW Bubonic Yellow and Vellojo\'s Cobra Leather

This a great site for trying to find the Vallejo equivalent for GW paints:
