Recommending a movie.

Ok I'm an avid movie watcher, I like good stories. good acting and when possible a good laugh
Yes I do like Rom-Coms as much as Drama and Action and in fact I have some recent DVD's I'd recommend:

Going The Distance...............Definitely An Adult Rom-Com lots of sexual references and humour.
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen........Lightweight and Relaxing, Emily Blunt stealing the movie out from under Ewan McGregor
Best Exotic Marigold Hotel............An ensemble cast Yes but funny, Tom Wilkinson and Maggie Smith being the 'best' defined characters.
Dream House.................Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts, Rachel Weisz; a really good and understated thriller with Craig showing off considerable talent in the lead role.

Last night however I watched what I'd call one of the most underrated and under publicised movies of the year. Despite Christian Bale's superb Batman portrayal this is one movie of his I'll not forget in a hurry.
Flowers of War...............Set during the 1937 "Rape of Nanking" it has Action sequences which are brilliantly carried out, some sequences of terrifying brutality and tearjerking humanity. It's not for the feint hearted and I'd seriously not recommend it for viewing with kids, but it is worth watching.



If you have a movie or two you'd recommend I'd be interested in seeing them.

Blindness, great film, got just about every emotion in it. Gets quite horrific at points, but it's got beautiful lighting and cinamatography

The Island, awesome sci fi. I would have though most will have seen it but I have been surprised by how few I know have

Awsome movie and Going the Distance has a very good imitation of the End narration by Morgan Freemen.


Can't believe I missed out The Adjustment Bureau....Again Emily Blunt starring, getting to like her as an actress.

Shawshank redemption absolutely.

The good the bad and the ugly a must! Elie Wallis if thats how you spell it is brilliant better than clint.

The snowman .....when I watched it with my daughter for the first time in twenty odd years it was ME that cried at the end, sniff.

Oh and Hot Fuzz...... Sean Pegg can do no wrong.

Oh what the heck ! I forgot predator purely for all the great lines my personal favourite being from Blaine

"bunch of slack jawed faggots! this stuff will make you a goddamn sexual tyrannosaurus...just like me!" you can feel the testosterone oozing off every line.

Agree with you totally on Flowers of War, an excellent film. And if i can give you a recommendation i will say go watch Red Rose of Normandy (its so bad its a 'must-see' :laugh

For comedies,
Submarine - truly odd, brilliant comedy set in 80's Wales. Living in Wales, it took me a while to realise it was set in the past!
Being John Malcovich - even weirder. Only saw it recently but, damn, it's crazy

Gonna take flack for this one, but the recent version of True Grit - the Dude does a good Duke

I'll second sand rat's recommendation - the new version of True Grit was very good. Come to that, the Dude was great as the Dude - The big lebowski is an ace film.

Here's my must-see's:

The Road- So bleak you want to cry for most of the movie.Watch after reading the book,which is hard going due to lack of punctuation.
Man On Fire- Gives a whole new meaning to explosive diarrhea!
Red State- Got half way through and couldnt believe it was a Kevin Smith movie.
Jeff,Who Lives At Home- A nice movie with Jason Segel and Ed Helms revolving around fate and synchronicity.
Drive- Ryan Gosling is a boss in this one,hard to believe he was in The Notebook.
Watchmen (Directors Cut)- I've lost count on how many times I've watched it.
A Scanner Darkly- A great movie based on a Philip K Dick classic.
Animal Kingdom- Needs no explanation.
The Muppets- Goddamn I love puppets,they did an awesome job on this one.
There Will Be Blood- 'I drink your milkshake!'
Step Brothers- Never fails to make me laugh.

There's many more but these instantly spring to mind.

eternal sunshine of the spotless mind - another one from the director of being john malkovich
city of lost children - directed by luc besson
amelie - as above
ghost in the shell - anime at it's best
akira - the first anime i ever saw
meet the feebles - one of peter jacksons early films
memento - guy pearce in a great role
fight club - the book is pure awesome too!

I'm not a massive film watcher, I tend to watch series more than most things. However one film that gets watched once a year is Muppets Christmas Carol (near Christmas obviously). I think it's probably the most atmospheric Christmas film about and surprisingly accurate to the original story.

I am being treated to the preview night of Skyfall for my birthday though

I am going to go out on a limb here and mention quite possibly the best sci-fi film I have seen since The Matrix.....


LOOPER This movie is AMAZING. sure the time travel is a bit wonky, but if you follow the austin powers time travel theory paradox, you will be just fine. great action, amazing acting by joseph gordon levitt and a story line that just sucks you in!!!!
Seriously it is now in my top five and a close second to Shawshank Redemption.

Steven Speilberg's first movie called The Duel is a classic.
The Green Mile was another good one.
There's a little heard of movie called Run that is FANTASTIC. Innocent kid accidentally kills a mob boss and for the rest of the movie he is on the run. Simple idea pulled off spectacularly.

For comedies,

Submarine missed the mark for me and everyone else i know who saw it which was wierd because it got good critical response. Kinda wanted to like it but couldn't. I didn't find it odd or comedic, just a bit ponderous, and I usually go for indie efforts.

Hmmm... What to recommend that's not too obvious.

Indie Game: The Movie - documentary that looks into small scale game development. Probably appeal to a lot of folks here and focuses on three excellent games - Braid, Super Meat Boy and Fez. Really enjoyable stuff that just clicked with me.

Being Elmo - another documentary about the bloke who is Elmo. Another very intriguing story of pursuing your dream and pretty moving at times.

Source Code - last year's best action/thriller for me. Really well done. Bowie's boy is a damned good director!

Drive - just watch it!

There are so many good ones. I'll just mention one of my favorites I can think of in the main genres.

Rom-Com: Love Actually - The little lady and I watch it every Chirstmas, very funny and good.

Comedy: The Three Amigos - A oldie but goodie. Maybe it's because where I am from but this movie gets quoted a lot.

Raunchy Comedy: Orgazmo - From the makers of South Park. About a Morman becoming a Porn Star Super Hero.

Action: 300 - Wow, enough said.

War Movie: Patton - In my opinion George C. Scott could have been Patton in real life.

Kung Fu: Prodigal Son - Best real martial arts (no flying or anything crazy like that) movie out there.

Drama: The Shawshank Redemption - I know it's been said, but it's that good that I don't care.
