Red Grey Knights

I\'m getting ready to start my Grey Knights detachment to complement my Imperial Fists, so I was browsing the Daemonhunters Codex and... boom! I fell in love with those red Grey Knights shown on the \"gallery pages\". Now, the problem is... how do I get that kind of deep, dark red? One of those knights (second line, far right if memory serves) is probably done in Scab Red, but I prefer the upper ones and I really have no clue about the way the guys at GW got that kinda red. I was thinking about a black undercoat, a layer of Boltgun Metal and a couple layers of Blood Red, but I\'m not that sure... what do you expert guys think?

Sorry i cant help as i havent seen the pics (or cant remember them) but why boltgun metal as a base for red !????

I just found out that sometimes (and I say: sometimes) having a metallic layer under a \"solid\" color gives the latter a slightly metallic look, and that\'s just how those reds look. They\'re not flat, they actually look quite metallic. That was just a guess, that\'s why I\'m asking for help

Ok, seeing how I got no advice I tried guessing how to get that red, and guess what? It came out plain ugly
Now, I used 2 layers of Vermin Brown, one of Red Gore, one of Blood Red and 2 of Scab Red, but the result, although nearly nice, is:
a) too purple-looking;
b) too thick, as I still can\'t thin down my paints as I\'d be supposed to do.
Now, the question is: how do I get something similar, but paler/lighter/more-reddish and with less layers? Would Vomit Brown x2, Red Gore x1, Scab Red x1 and Blood Red x1 help? Anybody\'s got any idea? Thank you all

At least paint scab red before red gore, because its darker.

Huh? I thought Red Gore was darker than Scab Red, or at least that\'s how I\'ve always seen it. Could it be because of the purple, shiny hue Scab Red has? Dunno, really...

After ruining two Grey Knights while trying to make\'em look purple-red, I decided to give up, I\'m simply not up to the task.
Now I\'ll just strip the paint off\'em (if I manage to, I heard it\'s not that easy) and go for the classic Chaos Black -> Boltgun Metal -> Mithril Silver scheme, hoping they\'ll come out at least decent. I\'m starting to think my Grey Knights were molded under a bad star...

I don\'t know the minis in question but here are two methods I use.

1) basecoat black, then use black ink mixed with blood red (or any other scarlet red) this gives you a brown red colour for the basecoat, just add more and more red to the mix to highlight until you are using pure red. This gives an earthy red.

2) Use purple ink for the shading colour, this gives a richer purply red.

If you want to take it further start adding yellow to the mix to make an orange highlight, either use an orangy yellow for a warmer highlight, or mix in a little white for a colder highlight. You can go all the way to yellow, or even white for the highlight, just depends upon the effect you are looking for.

You could try to go Scorched brown -> Scab Red -> Red Gore and highlight with a 33% Red Gore 33% Blood red and 33% blazing orange... I think I might try that on one of my reaper minis and post it to show results.

Yes, scorched brown is a great base for a deep red, and if that doesn\'t work, you can try mixing a tiny bit of midnight blue into the scabby stuff, which acts almost like black, but with a bit of purple to it. Personally, I tend to use the scorched brown the most...

If yer going to deepen a red... let\'s Red Gore.. not so deep a color.. glaze it with Flesh Wash... always works
