Red or Dead

Hello,

I am just about to start painting some Khorne Beserkers (for those of you not aquainted with Games Workshop or Warhammer 40,000, they are men in red armour) but I am unsure how to start and carry on for that matter.

I have been painting for some time and have always done red the hard way of using games workshop paints and lovingly spending hours applying layers over a black undercoat but i am sure there is an easier way.

Ok here are the queries I have -

1. What colour undercoat should I use?

2. What colour should I basecoat them with?

3. How should I highlight? I really want to use a quick and simple two line highlight but i want to avoid them looking pink or orange on the edge.

Are you in the UK?

If so Cheat and buy Halfords Red Plastic Primer.
Cheaper and guess what, its RED, much easier to work up to a brighter red than Black primer.
Other than that GW Foundation Mechandrite(SP) Red covers over Black pretty well and can be worked up easily.

i use the MEC red from Gw and then put alot of mud washes/brown ink washes over it to get a deep red starting point,
then its a case of painting the red up, about 25 min a model for the red armour fully highlighted

I\'ve been painting some red lately over a black basecoat and ive had success by using the foundation red(merchite..I think thats the name) with a tiny amount of dark angles green mixed in to darken it and then highlighting with the lighter reds of the GW range, I think blood something. best of luck

use orange to yellow for the highlights. Adding white makes pink marines....

But orange highlights can be just as wrong-looking.

If adding white doesn\'t produce the right colour then add both white and yellow or white and orange. Or use a flesh colour. Or use a mix of white and brown.

Vallejo Model Colour = Larger colour selection, Eye Dropper Bottles less wastage Therefore more paint for your money and the ability to develop large muscles from shaking the bottles.
Vallejo Game Colour = Perfect colour match for GW.
Vallejo AirBrush = Smoother paint especially mettalics, Lower coverage over dark primer (Grey or Black).
Reaper Master Series = Finer than GW, needs as much shaking as Vallejo, differing colour range.
Artists Acrylics = Larger Paint tubes, much thicker consistancy but if you use them to create washes a little goes a loooooong way.
Coat D\'Arms = Original GW colours
Foundry = Great colour Triad sets
GW = OK but with some flaws, Drying out too quick, expensive. Sometimes shortfall in the amount in the pot, ie Baadab Black seems to be the one I lost out on.

However there are some very useful colours in all the ranges and they are all intermixable.

P3 have some nice dark reds

as the Freak said, P3 is great for solid reds...

sanguine base covers black in two coats, and is a nice burgandy red...it can be shaded back down quite easily too...

skorne red is a good midtone, and is nice mixed into the sanguine base for a smooth transition...

khador base is the blood red equivilent...
mixed with skorne red for smooth transition once again...

heartfire(a yellow, with an orange tint) mixes in with the khador base, for a nice final highlight...

basecoat:mechrite red


blend back to scorched brown in some spots with the mechrite red...in brighter spots use mechrite mixed with blood red... equal amounts work pretty well. dont know if this will help but i have done a crap load of red over the past 6 months so check out my page and take a look at them andyou can see the colors i got for red. i would still reccomend using golden yellow for an edging highlight though imho or the berzerkers wont stick out as much.
