Redfinger's Update 9/23

I figure I have enough things going on that I should start an update thread instead of posting progress of single things in multiple threads, I dont know if it is possible to merge threads, but if I mod can do that it would be great!! I have my 120mm Space Marine thread that I would like to have merged with this one!

So on the topic of the 120mm Marine, here is an update on him;

I pinned the arms and tacked them in place with a small drop of glue to hold them in the position I like, the pouldrons are still blue tacked, but closer to where I will have them. You will also notice the beginings of an armor plate on the left thigh and shin...there will be matching ones on the other leg as well, these plates will be detailed with metal studs, I want the marine to have a heavy, reinforced look, and I think that will help. The belt will also be bulked out more to minimize that lovely hourglass figure. All in all this has been a really fun project to work on.

Here are some Malifaux that I am working on as well too. I dont know anything about the game, but they have been a lot of fun to paint;

And lastly, I am currently working on my personal Space Marine army, Imperial Fists, I have been playing around a little with the color scheme, and I have settled on the color yellow I like, Cadmium Yellow, and yes, it is an oil paint, and yes that is how these guys have been painted! The blue on the Librarian armor was also painted in oils too.

I will post more updates as I keep moving through things!

I really like what you've done with the gigantor space marine, but those pauldrons strike me as being too large for the rest of his body, but he's coming along very nicely. Those oil paints look really great, the color choices are nice and vibrant, i especially like what you've done with the librarian.

Several people have commented on the pouldrons.....I dont know why they seem out of scale, they are the original ones that came with the Forgeworld kit. I was planning on modifying them a bit, I was going to sand off the trim pieces, and smooth them out, then I was going to build them up similar to the Company Champion ones that you find in the GW command squad box. Perhaps if I shorten them a little that might help them appear smaller.

What other solutions might you guys recommend?

Nice work dude - personal fave is Librarian followed by the Romanesque marine...is that from Marneus set?

AHAHA LOVE that demon teddy. :D

For the pauldrons, they're already looking better as they seem better placed/dry-fitted. I wouldn't make them shorter.

So I have started on the pouldrons now. The idea I am going for is to give the armor a heavy reinforced look, so I am basing these loosely off of the company champion shoulders that come in the command squad box. Here is a conversion I did using them to give you an idea;

Kind of a plate on top of the pouldron thing...Then I have ordered some 2.5mm steel ball's that I will be placing as studs on the reinforced plate. Basically I had to sand all the trim down, then build it back up with some plasticard, then I gave it a layer of aves. I have a lot of cleaning/filling to still do, but you get the basic idea. I am going to have to do something with the back pack though, the new pouldron trim, plus the new position of the interferes with the fit of the back pack. It will probably be sticking out the back a little further than normal, I dont think that is a big deal though.

I have also started on converting the bolter to a Sternguard bolter, however after closer inspection of the bolter included in the kit, I determined it was a little undersized, and the quality of the casting was rather poor, so I am in the process of building a new one. The next step is to add another layer of outer skin, build the scope and the ammo clip. Take a look;

I have decided for the base that I am going to build the back end of a rhino, and position him is such a way as to make him look like he is coming out of the rhino, that should be loads of fun!

Thanks Meph, I apreciate the feedback, and to everyone else as well, thanks.

So I have spent most of this week nursing a tooth ache, had a root canal done early yesterday morning, and I am back on top of things today. So I thought I would update some progress on the marine and bolter.

Other than a little clean up work on the powerfist and pouldron I think this arm is pretty much done! I used the photo-etch chapter symbol with the name "Sigismund" on it, I know who he was and what he did, but that is not whom I am trying to represent in this model, I am simply leaving it to "fluff" and saying that maybe this sergeant received an honor and was allowed to wear the powerfist that Sigismund had once wielded.....I dont know, but take a loot at the photo none the less....

Also, I made more progress on the bolter, now I am just adding a few detail bits here and there, and I am still stewing on how to mount the scope, I may shorten it, but I rather like the extended look. I dont know if I am sold on the aquilla's on the sides. In the Imperial Fist photo-etch set there are 2 smaller placards that read "Hammer of Dorn" I thought those might look nice on the sides, I will play around with it and decide later.

Anyway till the next update stay frosty!!

The eagle looks nice, but Hammer of Dorn light be more original. :D
For the rest, awesome progress, the fist and Pauldron look awesome and the bolter's looking good also.
For the mounting of the scope. I have the scope that came with the model installed on my large model and it's mounted using just a simple saddle. (see image)

I like the changes you made to the pauldrons. Part of the problem was them compared to the size of the waist - they really gave him an hourglass figure! ;)

And what's that gray four-handed Malifaux figure? That's pretty cool looking! I can't wait to see what you do with it.

So you've got no problem hitch-hiking then. Or approving stuff using just gestures. :D

Meph, thanks for the image, I may change the mounting up a little bit though.

Kathryn, I think his name is "Chompy Bits" I am not sure as it is a commission I am doing and I dont really play Malifaux. It has been a blast to paint though and I am happy with the results so far.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, it helps keep me moving through the work.

Wow, that lens looks amazing!! I started another project today, so here is a World Eaters dread that I am working on. I got the unassembled dread as part of a trade. I dont play chaos so this guy will be auctioned off when finished...in the meantime, very fun to build, the FW dreads actually seem pretty decent. There is a bit of detail work still to do on this guy, some filling here and there, but for the most part he is ready for paint. He is armed with 2 DCCW's and a flamer/stormbolter. The spikes on the shoulder come from a chaos vehicle sprue, and the wrack/banner is a converted privateer press mini on a aluminum/brass structure, I thought it fit nicely. The big pit at the feet of the dread is going to be filled with skulls, bones and blood! I will be going for a very dark red on this dread and I am hoping it turns out well!

Enjoy the pics!

These guys are so cool, I am tempted to play orcs just to run these guys, I have no idea what there stats are or how viable they are, but coolness gets a 10! The customer wanted a nice orange-y bright red, this is the first step in that process. Basically I primed white, then sprayed a coat of Vallejo Black Red to help with the shadows, in retrospect I think I should have started with a lighter color, but I think I will pull it out no problem. Then after the black red dried I started working Windsor and Newton Cadmium Red onto the surface to get a nice deep rich red. After that came the highlights mixing Cadmium Red with Cadmium Yellow and working some white in as well. This coat will dry for about an hour, then get a coat of dull coat lacquer, then I will work the highlights/shadows a bit more to bring the depth back out...Anyway, enjoy the pics!
