I don\'t like the free paper that\'s doing the rounds in the UK (The Metro) as a large part of my brain is suspicious about \'free news\' and the things that can be mass-communicated through such papers (I like to pay for my indoctrination). Today though there\'s an article on the scientific experiment that has already had the world talking (and these forums too) and it\'s from that article that I\'d like to share one line with you:

\"Anyone who thinks the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) will destroy the world is a twat.\"

I had to laugh! lol lol

The press coverage of the LHC turn-on has p*ssed me off something rotten... last week the Sun (I hasten to add I didn\'t buy it but overheard two people on the train discussing the copy they had) actually had the headline \'The world ends next Wednesday\' followed by a constructive list of suggestions of things you could do in the last remaining week.

The LHC is probably the most exciting science experiment man has ever conducted and ranks up there in terms of advancement of the race with landing on the moon... and what do the press report? \"The end of the world is nigh\".

The chance of an accidental launch of a nuclear missile starting a nuclear holocaust is FAR more likely than the LHC experiement causing anything bad to happen.

That\'s not the ONLY thing that CERN representatives have said in the matter. There\'s been lots of articles published, by CERN people and by independent scientists, thoroughly analysing the alleged risks of the accelerator and putting things firmly into perspective. But somehow that hasn\'t helped and media is still doing their \"The end is near\" terror campaigns. No wonder professor Cox got a bit fed up...

Indeed.... I had to laugh too :) Think how many kids would get interested in science if they knew about this story... black holes, extra dimensions, people thinking the world could be sucked into a black hole and scientists calling people twats :) I think Professor Brian Cox should do ALL the PR from now on... Can you imagine all the extra interest in science that could be generated :)

Thinking about it he may have said \'twit\', but the paper showed \'t**t\'. I can\'t see \'twit\' being asterisked, but then I\'ve seen \'cock-up\' shown as \'c**k-up\' before now so I wouldn\'t be surprised if this PC-mad country has got us asterisking words like \'twit\'. Shocking.

I think his wife might challenge your assertion there. She\'s also mentioned on her blog that the two of them curse like sailors, so it\'s a safe bet it wasn\'t twit.

You have to love the logic of scientists being given death threats by nutters. \"Don\'t destroy the world... or I\'ll kill you.\" If they could do that, you\'d think they\'d at least have a decent list of demands.
