Related to \"NNM Why?\" Tips for using metallics?

Hello,

After reading the link that is just below this one (as I am writing this) which asks why NMM is so popular, I was wondering if anyone has any tips or knows any good sites descrinbing how to use metallics to get nice shading and highlights. I know about the wash/drybrush techniques. Do \"advanced\" metallic techniques go beyond this? Do you just use gradually lighter metallics (adding white or silver)? Just curious.

Allan wrote a very good tutorial on how to use metallics...

He showed how he painted he nurgle troll (his CMON name is allan c ).

In it he \"simply\" worked over a coat of diluted boltgun metal, applied on a white undercoat. Only a few highlites in a later stage were added.

To sum up a bit :
- first two diluted boltgun metal layers, on a white undercoat.
- then two washes of snakebite on the whole blade
- several washes of bestial brown without covering all the snakebite leather.
- a glazing process starts now : glazes of bestial brown mixed with blood red and sunburst yellow towards the extremities of the blade, then followed by glazes of this mixture with chaos black, until there is a high proportion of chaos black in it. The miwture must still be red. It is then applied as a wash in the cracks and to do a lining.
- on a few places, some highlites are created with mithril silver.

Thanks for that link, it was a great tutorial and the effect was quite unique. I knew that I would find a use for my college French someday! :D By the end I would have guessed that it was done NMM more than with metallics--in fact the series of washes seems to dull the metallics quite a lot.

NMM is waaaayyyyyyyy beyond my skills now, so I am trying to find some tips or techniques to improve my metallics.

Anyone else know of any?

Using metallics well is tricky. I\'ve found, though, that applying some of the same ideas and techniques as you would with NMM really helps out.

For example, you still want to have good blends between shades, and you need to have realistic and dramatic shadows and hilights. Check out some of the articles on here about NMM (especially Honza\'s Sky-Earth NMM), and play with those ideas using metallic paints.

I posted a pic on the other thread of an elf chick that I did with metallic paints but used Sky-Earth techniques. Generally, here\'s what I did (if I recall correctly; this was done quite a while ago):
  1. Base metallic areas with black. I\'ve found it\'s hard to get a good coat on white or grey primer.
  2. Give an even, thin coat of GW Boltgun Metal (or equivalent)
  3. Apply shadows with Reaper Steel
  4. Hilight with Reaper Truesilver
  5. Add white to Truesilver and hilight a bit more
The key to doing this is to make the transitions not too blended. You want any place where the metal would have a sharp or abrupt edge to have a sharp division in color.

The main thing is to keep practicing, and try different ideas!

Have you ever tried using \"Silk & Satin\" series instead of white?

I haven\'t, but I do have this nifty new stuff from Vallejo called Metallic Medium. Basically, it\'s metal-flake that you can add to whatever color you want. This would be great stuff to use for doing SEM (Sky-Earth metallics), since you can get any shade you want to be metallic in lustre.

Of course, classes probably won\'t let me try this out for a while. :(

I could translate it, but it would take me a really long time. Sorry, can\'t spare the hours it would take me. You could try to use Babelfish or some automatic online translator, and then email or post questions if there are things that are badly translated (there will be).

Silk & satins are even thinner-flaked(sp.???) than Vallejo\'s medium (which is a \"must have\").

I\'ve been experimenting with the Metal Medium as well. It is very cool stuff.

Here is my most recent example: Kelt Fianna with blue metalized armour

Wow! That\'s the most positive effect I think I\'ve ever had on this place... ;)

Glad it helped. Any chance of seeing some pictures?
