Removing/Converting

Hi,

Question, when filing down, for example, an unwanted icon on a miniature, you get these annoying scratchmarks. My question is, do you guys have any tips on how to get that area smooth again. Green stuff perhaps?

First of all, welcome to the forums :).

It mostly depends what tools you have.

You can use super-fine sandpaper, the same that\'s used to fix cars when they get scratches. I\'m lazier, and just use an X-acto blade (the same that i used to get the details off). The trick is to work slowly to get a smooth surface.

If you\'ve chopped off a whole section and need to build it up again, then, yes, any type of putty will do the trick. I\'d use GS with a rubber clay shaper, but many will say that miliput has the advantage that it can be cut and sanded easily to get everything as you want.

If you only want to remove scratch marks or something similar use some very fine wet-and-dry sand paper. This is very handy even if you don\'t do any conversions, since there can be surface irregularities from the casting on minis. You can find the paper in most DIY stores.

It makes a little difference if you\'re working on metal, resin or plastic but fine wet-and-dry papers or the equivalent (many modern emery boards are perfect for this and you can usually pick them up cheaply) is often the best way. If you do this right you can smooth a surface until it\'s shiny.

Plastic can also be smoothed to some extent by carefully brushing over with a solvent-loaded brush but it\'s not as controllable.
