Replacing/ Converting a sword on a mini.

I'm working on this lovely model:

Anyhow, I think that cricket bat sized sword kinda ruins the model for me, so I'd either like to carve it down to make it a bit more 'realistic' or replace it altogether. What material would I use? How do I do it?

Pointers/links to how to's/suggestions etc. would be awesome.

plastic card might be good. just a little bit of cuting/sanding and voila!

I decided to go ahead and file it down, as I figured if I screwed it up, I could go with the plasticard then.

Turned out halfway decent, if I don't say so meself.
