Reputation bashing...

I am still trying to work out the reputation feature of the new forum...but...

I have just discovered that I have received two anonymous 'negs' for two posts I have recently made with no explanation as to why. It seems to me that if people don't like someone's view they can just hit the reputation button and 'disapprove' of the post. I thought the whole point of a forum was to have constructive debate?

When I, experimentally, tried to use the feature myself it wouldn't allow me to disapprove of a post without a reason why...fair enough. How come it's happened to me though? Do you have to be a subscriber to anonymously 'disapprove'?:D

I don't give a damn about my bad reputation. Oh no no no no, not me me me me.

Those are good questions. I'm not really sure how it works, or why someone would leave you bad marks. Maybe Chern will see this. Which is actually, probably the reason you posted here.

My model horse forum actually turned off the ability to neg someone because like you suggested the idea was to have an open debate if there was a disagreement. But the rep thing is kinda weird from what I'm accustomed to. You can't see who left you rep unless they actually sign their name.

I strongly feel that if you post something, you should be responsible for your words. Accountability is something that the interwebz seems to let slide. People should be mature enough and be able to defend their stance in a logical fashion publicly, it rather than ninja someone from the shadows.

Just my thoughts on the matter. ;)

I have learned the hard way to never mess with the rep. Do what I do, forget that it is even a feature.

You're right of course...:)

I just don't like the idea that people can, as Kathryn said, "ninja you from the shadows":D

More worryingly...I haven't said anything even remotely contentious...yet.

some of us know what you're capable of ... LOL

I remember when the rep system was first implemented, and other than some initial interest, it was never really understood/cared enough to linger on.

Still, however, I don't like anonymous demerits. It can be abused, and it's certainly not what I envision when I think of our community here.

My God I've only just realised that you can add to other users rep!
I thought the admin was in control of it.
What a donut!

I only really discovered by accident...:)

Click on 'Notifications' in the top left of your screen and you can see any recent additions to your rep.

I don't really like the feature either. We mods can see who did what though, if you have the old Finn18 account left!

I probably use the rep system a handful of times a month. I think all positive though? There may be a neg lurking in the past somewhere, I don't recall :D I do tend to sign them though.

I don't mind the system, rather than spamming threads with "nice comment" or "quality step-by-step" I can just give someone a rep boost. Assuming that I haven't given them one too recently, in which case I'm urged to smear my appreciation about other users first, which I suppose is to stop people gaming the system? Not that I get anything out of it other than a self-satisfied little smile when I occasionally notice that someone has repped one of my posts.

I'd prefer it defaulted to showing the user name alongside the comment though, whether positive or negative. Being able to see a longer historical record might be nice too.

I don't really understand how the green pip levels work though and I don't think I want to, it's the mystery that keeps me intrigued :rotfl:

Cheers, B.

We can? Please instruct me!

How do you tell if it's a 'good rep' or a 'bad one'. I've got some that have a green bar by them, and some with a grey one.

Coming from a former admin of another forum a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....

See the Rep Power below your avatar? That comes from a variety of things, length of time as a member, post count, being a mod, and positive rep received is the standard run. There may be other specifics per board. Think of that as a bit of clout the higher the number. Green you gained positive rep, red negative rep, gray could be positive or negative but the person's Rep Power isn't strong enough to affect you either way.

That's pretty much the standard, there could be tweaks here and there - such as the gray is only neg but doesn't have the power to affect you and all positives go through. So it depends on the fine tuning but it's pretty much based on the Rep Power you already have.

We had a saying on that old forum about "mod repping" someone to hell and back. lol! Basically if a mod negged ya, you got nuked. ;)

I've tended to use it as a "yup, like this" or "ooo, really useful" and tend to just give out positive. Didn't realise that the recipient didn't see who +rep'd them - will start to sign my name now :s

If I strongly disagree with something I'll probably just either leave a post, or leave alone!

Oh well I never. Didn't know that existed. Just found out that I have two of these rep thingies. It's that little star button you press right? I am sure I have pressed that by accident - who knows what weird feedback was provided following my random pressing!

Edit: - I found some more stuff out on the internet. It seems that:

"What do the green, red, and grey dots mean?

A green dot indicates that you were given positive reputation. A grey dot indicates that the user gave you reputation, but it counted neither positive or negative due to them having no reputation power.

Why would reputation not count positive or negative?

When a new user first starts out, their reputation does not count. There are a few factors that determine when their reputation should start counting. Some of those factors are the number of posts, the number of days they have been registered, and the number of reputation points that have been given to them."

I have not seen anyone go hear yet, but I feel it is a point worth making.

Can you make positive (pos..? ;)) feedback anonymously?

It is just I see a trend in a lot of places to hold negative feedback to a higher standard of evidence. Please note, I am not defending anon negs. Only that it should follow the same rules as positive ones.

However to undermine my own argument, positive feedback is obviously more pleasant, if not always as useful. Is that reason alone to have different standards of proof? (Serious question)
