Requiem for a Dream

I know its been out for a while (2000 i think) but iv just watched this tonight.

I feel sick. This was possibly the most brutal, frightening, intense (second only to sunshine for intensity IMO) films I have ever watched.

Hostel and Saw don\'t have a patch on this. I recommend it to everyone (except for under 18\'s, certain scenes are VERY adult)

matty1001, that has to be one of the most disturbing movies Ive ever seen also... want a happy ending? wont get one with that movie...
oh and speaking of movies, I just watched a disturbing movie the other day, a Korean movie called \"Oldboy.\" I loved it, but boy is it a messed up film...
And I agree, movies like Hostel and Saw dont live up to a really brutal movie like Requiem, which sticks with you for days...

And before you go \"Oh, Monica Bellucci! I gotta watch this!\"... you will be too occupied with feeling sick to appreciate her visual qualities.

Another one is and old timer from the 70\'ties called \"I spit on your grave\" or \"I\'ll spit on your grave\". Really brutal stuff as well.

Is this the one with a certain pitched noised played at certain times to make you feel nausea? And the fire extinguisher scene? I vaguely recall hearing about it before.

But why do people want to watch films that make them feel ill, with films like Irreversible or Titanic? I could blow my brains out with a shotgun and feel ill for the rest of my life, if I so desired.

Anyhow, a recent picture of an old ex made me feel nauseous for days, so I reckon I just have a weak stomach.

Yep, and a 9 minutes long (!!) rape scene. That one really turned my stomach. I think it\'s the most sickening thing I\'ve ever seen on film.

When the film came out it was heavily criticised, mainly for this scene. It was accused of being exploiting and seeking shock value and all that. But, after seeing it, I must say that I really do see a point in having the scene in the film. By making the scene that long (you basically see the whole thing from start to finish with no cuts) you understand just how painful and tormenting such an experience is. The film don\'t hide anything and don\'t make anything seem other than it truly is. It\'s ugly, it\'s terrible, it\'s horrific and it makes you sick!

have yet to see the actual film though was gonna get it but it was ludicrously expensive

Because films like Requiem for a Dream or Irreversible tell you something real! They tell stories that are similar to things going on all around you every day. Yes, they made me feel bad when watching them, but they also made me think about things in real life in new ways. I can say for sure, that I will never watch Irreversible again, but I\'m glad I\'ve seen it. The way the film is made made me think very differently than I had before about violence and how to relate to it (I can\'t explain what I mean without going into a lengthy rant).

I saw Irreversible a while ago and I agree it is a great film. It does make you feel uncomfortable at times; but it\'s supposed to.

Another film I saw around the same time was Audition. It\'s a slow burner. It gradually gets into your brain so when the bad things happen they seem even more didturbing. I was unnerved for a while after that one.

It\'s ok, I know exactly what you mean. Yet still, no thanks. Years ago, I spent enough time with the paramedics to view first-hand the after-effects of said violence. But the experience was real, and it had purpose other than just to make one\'s self ill.

Similarly though, I\'d never do it again, yet glad I did.

Nope, not fun. Just watched. Fantastic film, but brutally realistic.

I loved how when the film started it was crazy and jumbled up, like Marcus, but as the film went on it became more normal.
And the rape scene, yes...well, worrying.

Old boy - yes a very strange film indeed.
Kind of like Kill Bill plotwise (As I remember it)

With sub themes of incest and torture.

I thought it was pretty good though.
Haven\'t heard of Irreversible, but I do remember hearing something about \"I spit on your grave\" - isn\'t it Spanish or something?

As for actual scenes, I think one of the worst I can remember is from Casino, where Joe Pesci and his \"Brother\" get taken to that field and \"whacked\" (literally) with baseball bats...

Requiem for a Dream was very nicely done. Gritty, and really takes the allure out of addictive drugs (at least I hope). Other movies have also done a reasonable job at that though - Trainspotting didn\'t really pull any punches, and Drugstore Cowboy was also sobering (probably one of Matt Dillon\'s best performances, IMHO).

Haven\'t seen Irreversible, but I have heard it is very disturbing. There was also a disturbing rape scene in Hotel New Hampshire. Actually, there were a number of strange, disturbing things in that film.

For some reason the interrogation scene (guy with the baby mask) in Brazil disturbs me. Also the rat cage torture device in 1984 gives me the willies.

I really enjoyed Requiem\'s theme of \"the easy fix.\" Everyone in that movie had one thing they were seeking that would make their life perfect and they self-destructed striving for it.

I haven\'t seen the other movies mentioned here... I typically don\'t seek out intensely graphic fare. Requiem was recommended to me, and I\'m glad I saw it. The film maker\'s first film, Pi, had some of the same theme but wasn\'t nearly as good.
