Revolving doors?

Here, we enter a revolving door and push on the right-hand panel, causing the door to turn to the left (counter-clockwise if viewed from above).

Do all revolving door go this way? or is it reversed in the southern hemisphere? or in countries that drive on the wrong side of the road?

Hmmm...good question. I think every one I have been through is as you say. I can\'t seem to remember any other way, even south of the equator.

Isn\'t the right side the wrong side :D.

Doors go anticlockwise here too and we drive on the left so that can\'t have any bearing. Same in England too if I remember correctly.

We drive on the left in Britain because its easier for a right handed cavalryman to swing a sword at an opponent if he is to their left.

Just a nuget of info there.

Uhhh...if that\'s the case, doesn\'t driving on the left hand side of the road necessarily put your \"opponent\" on your right? I\'m confused....if I understand you right, this means that if any of you come here to the states and get into some strange form of automotive cavalry fighting involving swords...we\'ll have the advantage..lol

for you what\'s drive on the wrong side of the car (and road): is fist gear close to you or the furthest away (left or right side of the \"H\")?

Wondering if they change the shifting linkage when they move the steering bits.

Its on the left side so further away. push for first, pull for 5th.

I read that there is a similar reason that people walk and drive on the left in Japan.

Something like a Samurai would always have his swords on the left hand side. So if he had to draw it it was better to have the opponent on the right so that they could draw and cut in one stroke instead of having to draw then redirect the blade. Hence people keep others to their right to kill them easier.

Why some countries drive on the right side of the road, rather than the left...

I don\'t know if this is definitely correct, but it\'s what my father told me when I was very young.

Driving on the left side of the road, as stated above, was because most people are right handed, and that was the sword-arm, and easier to swing on that side.

When wagons had guards, the driver would sit on the left, and the armed guard on the right. In older times, it was a sword -- still freer to swing. As time advanced, in what we call the \'wild west\', the position was held by a man with a shotgun. As with the right-handed aspect of cavalry riders, the shotgun rested into the right shoulder. In close quarters, the gunman might not have enough freedom of movement if he was pressed up to the driver, and recoil would jostle the driver and give the horses mixed signals.

This is also, from what I was told, why getting the front passenger seat is still called \'shotgun\'.

If anyone knows better/correctly, by all means, educate me.

The revolving door bit got me thinking, I do remeber one of my Grandmothers always telling me never to turn Anti-clockwise (Widdershins) as it was considered Bad luck and associated with witchcraft and the Devil.
However if you look at it logically the majority of people are Right handed and it is more efficient to use your right arm in an arc, rather than the left.

(Having said that I do know one guy who will never touch a door with his right hand as he claims there are too many people who do not wash after using the bathroom. And to be honest theres a kind of twisted logic to his \"Phobia\"). Just thought I\'d throw that in.

If you drive on the incorrect side...i mean right hand side of the road, it will mean that you can have your left arm on the window frame. If you are trying to throw something at someone who has just cut you off, then you will be throwing at a disadvantage. Hence Driving on the left is the correct way.

The revolving door at my uni goes clockwise, we walk in on the left and come out on the right. (if that makes any sense)

I can see the argument about the roads and driving on the left hand side is the correct way. As every else has said its easier to the sword arm (as most people are right handed) but in conversion to modern day its easier for drive by shooters as they will be firing with their stronger arm.

The question i wana know though are the pedals in reverse order for people who drive on the right?in the UK it goes l to r (clutch, brake,accelerator/gas for the US members) is that the same over the pond?

No. The pedals are not on the same side. That would be silly. Then the passenger would be working the pedals and the driver steering.
