Rising Standards - Revisted (or how you doing?)

Hi all.

back in september 2004 I started this thread:
Rising Standards

I just had another look at it

If you posted in it, it makes interesting reading. My average then was 7.95 and I was 300ish in the rankings, but now it\'s 8.45ish and I\'m nearly at 400! I know the number of contributers has increased but there\'s obviously a great deal of talent at the higher end.

people were talking back then of trying to get to a certain point in the rankings, or to be in a percentage point of the contributers.

How\'s your progress? lol

Well years ago and a few thousand lest posters..I was ranked in the top 50 but Ive been slipping ever since. Part of it is my fault. I dont post enough stuff. I spend more time sculpting than painting and a lot of what I sculpt can\'t beshown to the general public untill its released and that takes 3-6 months sometimes. By then I forget about it.

I have ben in a mood to get some painting done again and hope to break top 100 again. Thats going to be tough as theirs so many amazeing painters now that the competition will be hard.

What Im really amazed is how hight the standard has risen, the work being done is amazeing and lots of it by very young painters.. many in their teens still. If I had this sort of information 10 -15 years ago it would of been something. I think we can thank the net and places like CMON for this.

it\'s not all due to new people joining!

back when that thread started, I think I was in the 400-500\'s somewhere (and didn\'t really post on the forums :( )

since then I\'ve seemed to have made some progress :D

I seem to be stagnating at about the 7.8 level. A few go above 8, but it is hit and miss. I am happy with the work I am doing, and I can tell where I am doing better. I just need to get stuff up more often.

Well I know Ive improved. When I first got a ranking I was in the 1700 and there were about 2500 painters. My goal was to get above half way. Now I sit at about 700ish and my goal is to be top 500 by June and top 250 by end of year.

The rank isnt important its just something to spur me on to get better.

I think my max was 120ish last year, but I\'ve slipped a lot since. Lately all the stuff I\'ve put on CMON has been for sale. Between the down votes for having an auction attached, and not spending competition level amounts of time on pieces destined for eBay, I haven\'t really listed anything that I would expect could take my rating up.

Though in all honesty, I\'d rather be making money from sales of 7\'s and 8\'s than having a lot of 9\'s. Feels a lot more tangible. If people like my work enough to buy it, that makes me pretty damned happy. :)

My improvement has been pretty decent all the same. Compared to even a few months ago, my speed is up, quality is up... so overall I\'m producing better figures in less time. I\'m very pleased about that.

But I don\'t know about rising standards... Maybe double standards, though. <g>

I will pretty much echo what EArkham said, except I was never nearly that high in the rankings. Like supervike I had broken into the 500s but have dropped to the mid-700s. No big deal, I am happy to be rated that high among almost 4000 painters! Before I wound up taking a break from the hobby last year around this time I had just started to hit the 8 level, but with all the great new artists I see on here, my current stuff doesn\'t rate as high in comparison. That kind of scale change has been going on all the years I have been here though, so it shouldn\'t be too surprising.

Well, I posted in that thread and I wish I had posted my ranking. I\'d be able to see if I\'ve moved. I will record my present rank here so I can look back later and see if I\'ve changed.
As of this post I am 997/3667 or the top 27.19%.
I suspect I haven\'t moved more than 1 or 2 percentage points though. I\'ve been watching myself lately and I keep banging against the 25% mark, not quite getting in.
Of course it\'s my fault for not posting much. Only 1 of my top 5 minis was added since I posted in that thread almost a year and a half ago.
The really embarrassing point is that I have not added any of the marines I mentioned in that post. I haven\'t even finished painting them - some, but not all. I haven\'t photographed any.

Maybe this will inspire me to photo the basic marine who is finished and post him - though I\'m not satisfied with a flocked base anymore and need to buy a sci-fi appropriate one first.

It\'s inevitable that standards are going to change.

The standards have changed for Cathy and myself in the last year, so it stands to reason that they would change in everyone else\'s mind as welllol

I think people have seen the \"then and now\" pics we both have posted.

There are lots of new mini companies which have emerged since then, and they have been raising the bar on what a \"cool mini\" is before you even set down to paint it!

Just have to look at the CMON shop to see that.

One thing is for sure, Cathy and I have learned which minis to stay away from, due to bad manufacturing, or just being a real pain in the ass:];)

What used to get a 9 a year ago is lucky to get an 8 now, or possibly even less. Things have to be even more heavily converted to be considered worthy of a nice score these days.

I\'m sure we will all look back next year at this time and see how much sculpting and painting standards have changed.lol

For future reference, my rank as of today is #566. So I can have something to compare to next time we have this conversation :)

(I think I topped out around #490, about the time I posted Emperor Haghendorf, which was my first 8)

I peaked at #18 about 2-3 years ago when I was putting up figures regularly. I may not be in the top 200 at this point! I haven\'t checked in a while though.

I didn\'t post in that thread, but I\'ve basically been holding in the 175-225 range for a while now. I briefly hit the 150s for a while last year but its all been downhill since then (I\'ve not really posted anything new).

As of 12-02-06 I am 221.

I\'m hoping to get back into things this year, I have a few planned pieces left over from last years GD that I want to paint up for this years GD that will hopefully give me a little jump, but to be honest I think I\'m at the limit of my talents now. I don\'t forsee any quantum leaps foward and I\'m not sure any small improvements I do make will enable me to even stand still in the rankings.

Still the main thing is I\'m reasonably happy with my painting, although I can\'t do NMM as I would like.

I suck and will never stop to suck. While standards increase, my sucking will gradually become harder and harder until I swallow all of CMON whole, the servers break down and I am the last painter remaining. THAT\'s when I\'ll make my move.

(Seriously, I don\'t get better.)

I remember capping out around 485 after my last post. Been several months since then. Amazing how not doing any work can make your number drop over time. So many people doing quality work. now.

I will probably post a few more things after Atlanta.

I think to maintain your rank now you have to post increasingly better figures and get your average to go up.

To jump in the ranks you have to significantly improve, or failing that, post 3 sepearate entries of your highest ranking piece (ohhh no thats controversial!)

Don\'t think I posted in the previous thread so for reference at this point in time I\'m 872/3670
I\'m just now starting painting again, been months since I could even sit long enough to pick up a brush let alone post new pics

I think the percentages tell the story a lot better. While my ranking has worsened to below 500, the number of members has still increased. I\'ve rated consistently at around the top 15% of ranked members. It is that figure more than anything else which gets me over any depression about ranking.:)

PS Is 333 significant in any way, the number of the mother in law of the beast for isntance?
