I use that measure of my progress as well. I realize that it is not a perfect representation of my skills (or lack thereof) but it does give me something to shoot for. I am glad to see all the new talent here - I love seeing all the great work, it inspires as well as helping me to learn!

I have only been here a short while, but am having trouble as well, especially in the 8-9 range. I tend to use a good base for an extra point. I also am using the photo quality as a differentiating factor as well (even though this is not Cool Photo or Not...).

It reminds me of Rene Magritte\'s painting of the pipe. Underneath it says in French, \"This is not a pipe.\" It\'s a painting of a pipe. So, we\'re not looking at a mini, but a picture of one. All we can judge *is* the photo, because that\'s all we can see. I\'ve given good scores to badly photoed minis because I could tell that there was detail that wasn\'t coming across in the picture. If I were seeing them up close and in person, I\'d probably give better scores because I\'m near sighted and wouldn\'t see the flaws as easily.

that\'s the whole point really. there are so many minis on this site with enormously high ratings, that look like a pile of crud in real life(and I\'ve seen some) we vote on the image, with the assumption that the actual 3d model will look the same as it does in the image. It\'s the reason why NMM is rated higher, it photographs so much better.

and i don\'t think i\'m hard on myself, just very critical of the work I do. Oh, 5 posts to go......

Yeah tammy. Don\'t sell yourself short. I admire your work. I like the articles you have done for Harbinger too.

I actually think we should start a retro painting craze,,,paint with enamela, no blacklining, patchy coats and shitty bases, just like 30 years ago...maybe I can then finally get into the top 50 lollollollollollollollollollol
Gee, hard on yourself much? You\'re still far, far better than most of us mere mortals.

Thats always been my beef with NMM. Yes it looks good in a photo but if you were to pick up the model and turn it, nothig changes, it isn\'t metal, and its so much more obvious that its a fake. By the way, I apppreciate NMM, and realize the type of efffect it is trying to achieve, so I don\'t scoer minis lower ue to NMM, I just never use it myself for the above reasons.

The word is spreading...

I have noticed a huge increase in painters from Europe submitting examples of their work. This didn\'t happen quite so much before, as this is an English language site.

I think quite a few of us English-only speakers would be wary about submitting our work on a French, Spanish or Polish site. The word seems to be spreading however, and more and more people are posting their works. Which is good:D

It is said that iron sharpens iron, and I think that is truly the case with CMON. I look at models that won awards just ten years ago, and they don\'t get serious glances at any competitions today. This might also be attributed to the fact that better sculpts are being turned out by the manufacturers - it\'s hard to paint a rough lump of lead into a GD winner if you have even an average reaper mini to compare it with.

I have also used the photo as a deciding factor. A pic is the window that we have to look at a mini through. If the artist really cares about their model, they need to make sure that they clean that window off real good so that we can see through it without hinderance.

I have my theory about rising standards.
I am currently working on some space marines in the same color scheme I used on my last space marines a couple years before discovering CMON. Obviously they are painted much better.

My theory is when I post them they won\'t score any better than the old ones because the standards are much higher, and my old marines were rated back when there were only a few dozen users on CMON.

I think you are on to a certainty there Vince...

I would be surprised if anything else happened.

Because of the increased size of CMON that\'s almost like comparing a competition at your local store with a GD.

A very good analogy, with the exception that the quality of figures is in the main, better.
I believe that recently I have painted stuff that a few years ago I thought I could never achieve. This is due to this site, and the advice and help I have recieved, from past and present members.
Personally I think that the increase in the standard shown on the site is due to the people here, we are all constantly pushing each other to improve. Not a Bad thing! :D

There seems to be a lot more new users that are very good painters who wont necessarily(?) be scoring with a wow factor.
I know what I mean.:D
