While I stopped reading the WOT years ago, I still find this news sad.

Wonder if someone will ghost write the ending.

He was supposedly working on the last book. I never even finished #9, finding the whole thing to be meandering too much to keep my attention.

I really liked the first few though. Sad news.

He said he was working on the 12th and final book - and the notes to finish it up if he died before he got finished. So there is hope that the 12th will come out in two years as scheduled.

Was he sick? That sounds as though he was expecting the possibility of his death.

Flying monkey flip! I just read his journal two days ago and things were going fine. In fact, he had a family reunion in which he told everyone the story of the final book. It apparently took a couple of hours and had some huge cliffhangers.

For those who weren\'t aware, he was suffering from amyloidosis (a disease which causes the red blood cells to stop functioning properly and to accumulate in the heart and other various organs). It\'s the kind of disease with a mean survival rate of about a year.

In his journal he mentioned that everything was outlined and ready to be written. If he died beforehand, Harriet (his wife) is entrusted with finishing it.

While many have fallen away from his readership because of his extensive writing, I have to say that the last two books were my favourite. There was just something so ineffably urgent and cool about them.

So far my favourite bit of the series is when Lan marches off by himself to fight in the Waste. It is almost a signpost, saying that Tarmon Gaidan has begun. He does it to let Rand know that he has to stop fooling around and get to the borderlands where everything is going to go down.

It makes me tear up just writing about it. I won\'t say anymore, cause I don\'t want to ruin it for those who haven\'t gotten there yet. All I say is that it\'s very cool. Especially Nynaeve\'s reaction to it.

The only other bit that comes close is when Rand cleanses Saidin. Talk about kick butt.

What a shame to lose another author in their prime, R.I.P. Robert Jordan


Jordan knew he might not survive, so he was preparing to tie up the loose ends of WOT and had a ghost writer to work from his notes, lined up just in case.

IMO I think this 12th book is going to be a disappointment, it’s going to be a rush job to bring any kind of decent ending to the dozens of characters and dozens of side plots in the story.

I have also read all the books, and I agree that the final book may not live up to the first 4 or so (They were the best in the series). I do think it will be a good ending to the series though. He made arrangements in case this happened, and had known about his health for a while.

Rest in peace Robert, we hardly knew ye.

Sad news. But I\'ve followed this as well and knew that he might pass away with no notice.

Well. I\'m happy he made arrangements.

RIP. Robert Jordan! The author that cemented my interest in fantasy.

Don\'t feel bad about reading them all Wiccanpony. My father in law is one of those guys who would read the book. Then reread it when a new one was coming out. :yes:

I\'ve kind of avoided this thread because I got mad at Jordan. I loved the first few books of wheel of time but then it got to the point where he was obviously milking it for all he could get so I stopped reading them. I feel bad for him, tho. And his wife. He could have been so much more. RIP Mr Jordan.

Dont know that I would say he was milking it Liz - he was trying something that had not been done before in my experience - yeah, I got a bit frustrated but overall the experience has been good.

what a shame indeed, even though I haven\'t read his bokks I find it sad, I have serveral friends that loved the books

Never was able to get into this series...tried a couple of times, but it never held my interest. Some of his Conan stuff wasn\'t too bad.

Sad to see him go, though. He was a prolific writer.

Let\'s hope GRRM doesn\'t leave us early...
