Rules Question: Amulet of Retribution/Spike and kill credit

Do monsters/heroes killed by the amulet of retribution or Spike's ability count as being killed by the hero with the item, or do they count as being killed by passive damage (like traps)?

I gonna say since it is a Hero's effect or gear, it should count as from the hero IMHO. We have been having lots of fun loading spike up with heavy DEF and health and just having him run around triggering paybacks. I think he should get the credit for the kills.
