he guys i have a question about rusting up black (iron hands) power armor...
I have been searching for examples of how to rust up black armor for a while now and havent been able to find good pics...so my question is would i be able to get a nice rust effect by layering brown washes/glazes to a black basecoat?, and if so links would be great :)...(using scorched brown, snakebite leather and desert yellow for example)...want it to look like the rust effects cyril and allan c use...
best regards

I\'d try to make it a bit more convincing by showing battle damage first, to introduce places where the rust might take hold on the armour. Then to rust the battle damage.

Rust effects should be done using very thin paint, so instead of brown over black, I\'d undercoat the rusty areas with white first. Otherwise, you\'ll never see the brown.

Nitpicking point... isn\'t space marine power armour made of something called ceramite, or something like that? Don\'t think it\'s metallic, though I could well be wrong. And you\'re entitled to paint your minis as you want them anyway.

tnx for the reply :)

i did paint on battle damage first using the \"painted on scratch effect\" used by cyril and kaple and alot of others but thought that by layering alot of thin washes/glazes i could build up a desent rust effect in places were the black paint was scratched off so to speak.
but was wondering if it could be done on the black itself..like on the inside of a shoulder pad trim..or around the metallic parts of a space marine helmet..that sort of stuff...well tnx anyway think i\'ll just have to try it out :) cheers

Yep, it can. Just as long as you put a lighter colour down to cover the black. White is the obvious choice, but perhaps Space Wolves Grey, or even Shadow Grey. Brown glazes over black will be nigh invisible.

I would agree with Mod - maybe if you wait to add the rust/damage after you\'ve built up your highlighting...?

@Mod - I think the ceramite of the armour is only in layers - not all the way through. But then - it doesn\'t really exist, so who cares? :D

i did do all the high lights before doing the scratches/battle damage/bullet holes...the Jakob Nielsen way by using sharp highlights in combination with washes of purple and green to \"cheat\" my way out of blending black wich is a pain in the arse(as you all know) and making the armor look black and not grey :}...should try it its a little getting used to but results are nice :}...big tnx to mod...tried doing the rust on a grey base coat it worked like a charm :}...will post pics after this saturday when i enter it in the local painting compo ...regards
