Ive been experimenting with \"weathering powders\" bought from my local modelling shop with some good early results (sorry no pictures, my computer is in bits!).
I have the Mig productions one, it is a VERY fine powder that you apply with a dry brush then seal with varnish (spray preferable). easy
OR you could just water down Dark flesh, Vermin brown, beastial/beasty brown, fiery orange........... A La \'MR\' Cyril esq. Its what works for you!
I like the change of texture from the weathering powders, but Im sure there are lots of techniques.

see above, or make your own from pastel chalks. Be aware that painting rust gives better results on infantry sized models. try this: drybrush bestial, dabble on vermin, then fiery orange in small patches... this is dry rust, while wet rust can be achieved by using inks over the vermin, instead of orange.

yo man, try a product called rust-all or rustall, its the best rust thing you can get for models, about 20 quid for a set though but its good stuff

Rust-All is very good. It comes with four 2oz bottles: a black base coat, a rusty suspension in an alcohol solution, very fine dust, and a clear solution which I never used (and don\'t really remember what it\'s supposed to do -- might be merely clear coat, but I think it makes the rust \"spotty\"). In fact, I only ever really used the rusty suspension and the fine dust, but I\'m sure you can buy those seperately.
When you go through the whole process, which is basically four stages of application, you\'d be hard pressed to tell the difference between the result and a real piece of rusted metal.
I hadn\'t used it in a while, though I\'ve been on a NMM kick lately. Before I found Vallejo Smoke, I\'d use a light, thin coat of the rusty solution and a little black ink on all metal I did.

Thats essentially what \'instant rust\' is. And they are really very good because they actually make rust! Mark Bedford uses them a lot on his Nurgle minis and lord of the rings trolls.Originally posted by Aragorns_mate

theres a way to do it with actual rust...
take some iron whool and put it in a small jar (baby jar works great for this!)... fill the jar with regular plain old tap water... then simply place the jar outside or in a sunny spot for a day or so.. Stir contents... continue to do this till you got no whool left and basicly just rust!..
remove the rust from the jar let it dry a lil.. after this you can ether glue some on brush it on with a little glue on the brush.. brush the stain with a clean brush.. or brush it on with glue then go over with a clean brush... more about it here
