Rusty Skills

So, after at least a year and a half, probably closer to two years, things in my life have finally let me get back to painting. I\'ve got my workstation all set up, got plenty of minis ready to go, and tons of ideas on what to do. I\'m really looking forward to it.

The only thing is, last night I finally broke out the brushes, and did some \"color experimenting\" on a plastic GW Ork. I\'m wanting to paint my Troolbloods for Hordes, so needed a test subject with some musculature to get my skintone right (yes, that means I have a blue ork; sue me).

Anyway, in the process, I found that my \"chops\" are definitely rusty. My brush control was off, my paint consistency was off, everything just felt like I was riding a bike for the first time. It also took me what felt like forever to get a crappy result (at least compared to what I was doing like 2 years ago).

Anyone else coming back to this hobby after a long break have any tips, pointers, words of encouragement, or feel like pointing and laughing at me?

I had a 7 - 8 yr break.
All you have to do is paint, and paint and paint.
It will be frustrating but it will come back.

I had an 17 year break and when I came back it was the same thing. Not to mention the standars were WAYYYYY higher than when I got out. But the good thing is I caught up with myself in the first mini and now I\'m painting way better than I ever have. Not that I\'m amy good yet (6-7\'s) but I know what thinned paint is and how it\'s supposed to work in theory at least.

Just keep plugging away and things will come back in a mini or two. Then start the trollbloods. Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement!

I\'ve been working on some stuff today, and rather than trying new techniques (which I think was part of my issue), I\'ve gone back to my beloved tweening, and I think I\'m starting to remember how to do this stuff.

There\'s still a little trial and error in getting my consistencies right, but I\'m sure that will come back the more I paint.

Now, I just need to figure out this nifty new camera, so I can get some decent pictures when I\'m done. ;)
