As a follow up to my recent Evil Clown, may I introduce the WIP thread for my latest: Sad Clown.

Not bad but drapery seems to be your weak point, atm he look like he's wearing a ribbed condom! Bear in mind how the clothing will drease and fold with the structures beneath it (yeah it does my head in too!). This should help:

Freak, thats a really useful set of illustrations! Thanks for posting that.....not a sculptor myself but is good background info for visualisation.

Good work on the clown. Agree the clothing looks off at the moment but I do like the face and and am a fan of the overly large shoes! Acts to accentuate this fella's unhapiness.

I love he face mate very well done. While the wrinkles in the clothes aren't "correct", I think they go really well with your change to the accordian. Keep it up mate.

You took the words right out of my mouth! The torso was intended to look like rolls of fat under the tight material but didn't work out. I decided to leave it as the accordian will obscure this anyway. I am in the process of carving away a layer from the legs so I can make another go of it.

It's not high end quality stuff but it's a good reference for explaining where creases form and why.

If you are going for rolls of fat, bear in mind that the bigger people get, the few rolls there are. A skinny person will bend over and you will get loads of little rolls where as if they have a big gut, it will fold over in one or maybe two. The face a shoes are brill btw, I can't do shoes for love nor money atm

Cheers! I'm pleased to hear that as it's really something I aimed to improve on from by Evil Clown.

BTW once complete and removed from the cork, I'll be sculpting soles and heels to the shoes.

I've cut away the legs (and laces) with the intention of resculpting them:

I'm not quite sure I was able to cut away as much space as I needed...

The front is looking slightly better (still work to go):

But the reverse looks horrendous:

I know the 'ribbed' effect looks completely overworked: this is not the look I'm aiming to achieve! I know what I want in my head but without yet more practice I can't quite achieve the style I desire.

Hi Moonmin,

I like him lot mate. The facial expression is spot on. The front of the trousers is looking better too.

Something to consider for future projects maybe, is that your folds look a little large in places and a little too uniform. I think that's what's giving him the ribbed protection effect. Do you use a clay shaper to smooth on sausages of putty for the folds? If so maybe you need to try one with a smaller tip? I haven't tackled clothing myself yet and I sculpt in Fimo so its gonna be different. But I would use a needle tool I made myself (sewing needle heated up and bent to about 45 degrees then fitted to an old brush handle) to shape fine small folds or the tight ends of large ones and then do the larger areas with my clay shapers.

It's quite fitting that my face currently looks like this clown! I had quite a nasty accident on Tuesday invloving my right index finger and a car door. As a result I'll be out of action for at least a week or two. Considering I'm incredibly lucky to have escaped with the finger intact I have no intention of rushing my recovery. Still, it's given me renewed excitement for projects present and future. Watch this space!

Your clowns look great.
But it's a shame you changed your plans about this one...
I realy liked the drum.
Maybe you could do another one following the inicial concept sketches.
This way you would have a clown band.

Hi Moonmin,

Sorry to hear about your accident mate. Hope the finger heals well. Take it easy. I can sympathise I crashed my push bike last week and have a "coin purse" under my elbow as my friend puts it. I've been unable to do any painting or sculpting for a week so far. I'm hoping it will be better once the stitches come out Tuesday, depends on the dressing i'll have if any then.

Thanks for the kind words. I hope it's good news for you on Tuesday and that you return to the hobby with a newly restored passion I'll be visiting the nurse too on Tuesday (damned bank holiday weekend...).

Cheers! Good thinking with the balloons. I'm trying to keep a list of all clown related paraphernalia for future projects! I intend to have both this and the pie weilding clown cast. There are more ideas up my sleeves, depending upon how well received these are, including a (possibly Kingdom Death inspired...) sexy clown, lol.

Haha good idea! Maybe if I get round to sculpting one I'll hook you up with a free cast ;-)

My next step is to fit the accordian and sculpt the arms and hands. In order to do this I had to bulk out the back a little - otherwise the arms would have been too far forward.

I've used this as an opportunity to de-condom his back(!).

This is last nights progress. I'll attach the accordian and arms wiring tonight. I intend to shape the armature, sculpt the hands then clip the wires. Separating the accordian from the torso will allow me to add the hands in-situ but allow it to be cast in two parts.
