SageMonkey's Getting Back Into It Log

Yeah - their static grass is not that good. Mainly because the color mix is odd.

Yeah there were red pieces in there it was really weird XD. Well regardless I covered most of it with the WS bushes type material, which I think looks okay haha.

Congrats on the completions and the latest Picts are a bit easier to see in the WIP.

I hope they are! I'm pretty happy with how those pictures came out but I still need to make myself a lightbox.

I'm headed to NYC from now until Friday night so expect an update Saturday morning. I'm going to immediately start work on the two other Hobbits I have in my queue, but these will be quick paintjobs as they're being given to my brother. I'm going to focus on speed while maintaining proper brush control and color placement for these minis, as well as simple basing. I'll still upload them to the Gallery but they'll be tabletop at best. If anyone is interested, I'm following the hobbit Step-by-Step from the previous edition of the GW How to Paint Citadel Miniatures book to give you an idea of the quality I'm aiming for.

Anyway, I'll post back then! Adios!

I'm back from NYC and I'll get some WIP pictures up tonight of the next Hobbit. Hopefully I'll have time to get some good work done but otherwise I have it assembled and primed so far. Good to be back!

Here are the two next Hobbits I'll be painting. These two will actually be going to my brother for his Hobbiton 3D puzzle so I won't be painting them to quite the same standard as the previous Hobbit (not to say that was to such a high standard either but it's the best I can do at this point xD).

The one I'm working on first is the one primed white. The only reason the second is black is because he'll have a black overcoat and darker clothes and I'm too lazy to repaint the whole coat black over a white primer haha. I'm going to have to prime that one a bit more because it didn't get enough coverage but I'll get to that once I'm done the first one.

Also, I'm using a slightly better camera for my WIPs than the one I was using before and hopefully it'll allow the WIP shots to give a better idea of the progress I've completed and to really show off the details. I found the other camera had the WIPs coming out a bit dark and the colours looking flat so it was hard to see the highlights and shading and such.

By the way, I'm going to count the points for the previously uploaded Gallery shots once they each reach 50 votes. I think that way I'll have a decently accurate score for each of the minis. So far I'm pretty pleased with the scores on them :). 5s are really great for me seeing as I haven't painted in such a long time! I'm off to paint now but I'll update tomorrow!

Got some work done last night. Just did the skin and some of the basecoats. I'm going to do all the basecoats of the different parts of the mini and then highlight them one after the other. Once again, this and the other Hobbit are really not meant to be for up close display, mostly just to act as companion pieces to my brother's Hobbiton. They'll probably only be viewed from arms length if even that. Regardless they're going to be quick paintjobs, and for them I'm really just trying to practice brushwork and getting each colour on nice and neatly.

Enough talk, here are some WIP shots:

I've also decided to not upload this or the other Hobbit I'll be working on after it to the Gallery. They aren't personal pieces and they aren't minis that I'm going to be especially proud of on a personal level as they're really just supposed to be quick. I don't feel it's fair to get points for posting things on the gallery that I didn't put my maximal amount of effort into. Once I get on to the Uruk I'll definitely post that to the Gallery.

Finished the horn hobbit today! Very basic paintjob but definitely a lot of fun to paint the little guy! Didn't take long but I'm happy with the results for the amount of effort and time I put in and frankly I think it looks okay nonetheless! Definitely good practice in terms of brush work and placing the paint neatly, so I can't complain. Any painting is good as it keeps me working and each miniature completed improves my skills somewhat, even if it's only at such a low standard as this.

Here are the pictures:

Going to start work on the second Hobbit and should have him done by the end of the week, just because I don't have a whole lot of time this week to paint. We'll see though! Working on the black coat is going to be an interesting experience as I don't paint black very often and it seems like a somewhat difficult shade to master. We'll see how it turns out! I'm thinking that once I get to the 150pt mark I might buy some more Hobbits and paint them up similarly to this guy to really populate my brother's Hobbiton :D

Whelp, I screwed up. Sort of. Kind of. In all honesty not really. I just put a pledge down for the Gnomish Adventurers Kickstarter campaign. Yep. I bought minis. Ooops. My pledge rewards are two sets of Gnomes and the KS Dwarven Troll. The thing is though, they'll only be arriving in August, which happens to coincide with my birthday. That coupled with the fact that the money I used was procured from sales, I'd say that overall I didn't really cheat on my system. Eh, regardless I'm not too worried about it. I've got to focus on painting, not worrying ;P

Speaking of which; I'm off to go finish all the basecoats on that Hobbit! Didn't have time to get too much work done last night and probably won't have time tomorrow so today, Thursday and then onwards through the weekend are to be my dedicated working days/evenings. Hope to have the whole mini done by Sunday evening :D

I'm off!

PS: One last tiny thing: If you haven't voted on the three minis I posted on the Gallery yet, please do! It'd be much appreciated and I'm only about 10 votes on each away from 50 on all of them! Here are the links:

Got all the basecoats done tonight. They're kind of dark in some areas, but I'll break it down nonetheless: Coat and Hat are black, Inside Lining of Coat is Thornwood Green (P3), Pants and Cane are Battlefield Brown (P3), Skin is Kislev Flesh (GW), Waistcoat will be red but is based Dark Flesh (GW). I haven't done anything on the hair as it will come last and the colors will be carefully applied so as to not mess with the other work. Thinking the hair will probably end up grey, but I'm still working on how I'll do that.

Anyway here are the pics:

Finished up the Old Hobbit this morning! Very quick paintjob, nice and relaxing. Obviously not a super high level of quality, but that wasn't really the point. Here he is:

I'm onto another personal project now! Going to be painting another Uruk Hai Berserker, this time a better casted one without all the bubbles and holes of that other terrible Finecast Uruk I painted. Going to be my first foray into Reaper MS paints. I'll be using the Dark Skintone triad with a bit of GW Dark Flesh mixed in to paint the skin. I'll probably start work on that tomorrow, but definitely sometime this coming week!

Painted up the basecoat on the Uruk's skin! Used too thin paint so this took me many more layers than I usually work with to get the paint to be opaque -_-. Typically I use pretty dilute paint to build my colours (or try to that is xD) but this was just ridiculous! Definitely won't thin the paint that much again haha! Here he is:

I like the colours the Reaper Paints have been giving me thus far. They dry very matte and even, even after the paint was so thinned lol. The dropper bottles are also a huge improvement over standard pop-tops and really make the job easier. Definitely will buy more when the time comes!!

I'm incredibly busy this week so I doubt I'll be able to get a ton of work done but I want to start building up the layers of skin tone on Thursday evening and possibly on Friday as I have a day off. This weekend is packed though so I doubt I'll get much done then.

Oh well, we'll see how the week plays out! Regardless, since I've started this project log I've gotten more painting done than ever before, which I'm very proud of! Hopefully I can keep this train rolling :D

Quick little update (unfortunately without sweet pics):

Gotten a bit of work done over the past few days on the Uruk. I'm slowly building the highlights using extremely thinned layers of paint. I'm very slowly changing the hue between mixes so hopefully the transition from dark to light is subtle. At this point though the highlights are not extremely apparent but I'm working on it! I'm hoping that over the next two days I'll be able to finish the skin highlights, and then I'll probably work on deepening the shading with a tiny bit of Necron Abyss mixed into the Reaper Dark Skin Shade, just to make everything pop a bit more.

I'll try and post some pictures either today or tomorrow!

I like the hobbiy, I suggest that you start trying out diffrent ways of photograf your minis so you can get sharpeness of the whole object. But it depends which camera you have. In any way good work.

I've been working a lot on the Uruk these past few days and I just wanted to post a very quick update. I have basically fully completed the skin and metal parts at this point, and now have all the other parts basecoated. I tried to do some TMM on the metal parts and while I think it looks decent for a first try on the helmet, the sword didn't work out as well as I would have liked. Oh well, live and learn! I'm definitely going to continue practicing this technique on some models with a bit more dynamic metal parts because the Uruk's sword (it's shape and position) doesn't seem to play well to the shading needed in the technique.

Here it is:

I also based and primed a few marines I had lying around from a couple of years ago which I'll be quickly painting up at my LGS sometime over the March Break.

That's all for now, cheers!

TMM, even if done at a basic level, is head and shoulders above just a basecoat of metallic. So keep working at it, and know it's already better off!

I agree, I like the look much better than just drybrushed and washed gunmetal! It's an interesting technique that I feel like requires a lot of research but I'm eager to continue practicing it! I'd also like to learn how to paint NMM, but I suppose it's one thing at a time XD

No update, really wasn't feeling it today, if that makes any sense. I got a bit of painting done but I wasn't happy with it, so I'm going to redo it all tomorrow. Thankfully I didn't do a whole lot so it won't be a big issue.

Thought I'd just get some musings out there that I had today. I sort of realized that even though I'm very happy with the painting I did for the skin on this Uruk, I really hate the mini. Not only was the finecast full of holes and murky detail, but the mini itself is just bland and lifeless. The pose isn't all that dynamic, and there's no life to the miniature. It's literally 3 parts; Skin, Cloth and Metal. Not that miniatures need to be chock full of detail in every last corner (as a lot of other GW miniatures seem to be, which is equally bad) but none of the parts seem to have any cohesion. They don't make a fun miniature to paint, it just feels like work. There's no real life or sense of narration behind the miniature. It's just an evil dude with a big sword. Oh golly oh my, how amazing.

I have quite a few bland GW miniatures in my "pile" now that I look through it. I don't know what to do with them but I suppose I can try and sell them, because I'd rather be inspired to paint a miniature based on it's own merits and not simply to garner up some points or to get it out of the way. I'd feel terrible throwing away any of them so I guess selling them is my only option.

That's also not to say that all GW miniatures are bland or boring, not at all. I have quite a few very interesting and very intriguing GW minis in that pile as well, which I'm very excited to get to! It's just everything in between that seems more like it's going to be a boring monotonous slog rather than a fun time. Having some less than stellar miniatures to practice on is fine, and in fact I like to have some of those on hand, it just seems that my pile is about 90% boring minis and 10% fun ones.

Anyway, I'm going to finish this Uruk, post it on the gallery and then never paint another Uruk again. I have two more of those hole-filled finecast Uruks in my drawers and frankly I have no intentions of painting them. Once I'm done this guy, I'm going to move on to something fun :)

Adieu for now!
