as i\'m not getting any answer on the other thread, i thought that i would post it here.

i just wanted to know:

how does the painting compeetition work?(I.E.- what catagorys are there...)

is it harder that GD?(is the painting over all better)

is it fun?

Salute is primarily an historic gamers show, Napolionics and that sort of thing but don\'t let that put you off

It can be a great day out and the games on the day are wide and varied. As for the painting comp well the categories haven\'t been announced yet so like the rest of us you will have to keep checking the Salute web site at regular times there should be something up around Feb/March time but usually allow for all aspects of the hobby both in historic and sci-fi/fantasy and covers single models and units as well as diorama\'s.

A lot of people will go for the trade stands as a quick glance down the traders list should more that wet most peoples apertite.

i don\'t touch any historical stuff and i still had a good old time!

Basically the painting Comp at Salute is quite tough but don\'t let that put you off as their judging standards are better than GW\'s. Plus they aren\'t just looking at the latest company Splash.
Their are several CMON members who\'ve managed to garner a trophy 1st, 2nd, or 3rd at Salute,m War Griffon, Louw, Mrika, Avicenna, Rob lowe to mention just a few.

Regretfully I\'m scupped from going this year. An unexpected large bill for car repairs (800 +) has put a huge hole in my plans.

damnit mike! that is, indeed a shame. nothing beats the scare of you trying to flick my ear last year! nearly jumped out of my boots!

I\'m seriously looking forward to Salute as it\'ll be my first non GW painting comp...

as for the entries, I did go back and look through the winners from the last few years... as has been mentioned it is primarily a historical event so the quality of the historical minis is exceptional... the quality of the winners in the sci-fi and fantasy categories seems to vary wildly from absolutely stunning GD+ standard to some stuff which looks pretty ropey and probably wouldn\'t make 1st cut in the UK demons these days...

I guess if the fantasy/sci fi side of the event is relatively new that side will pick up in quality as the event gets better known.... but it certainly looks like fun

If nothing else I want to scrounge ideas off all the historical mini painters

Bare in mind that although they had a good photo set up there being used they seem to have managed an excellent job of trashing a lot of the images when they put them on the site.

Plus even last years show photos don\'t show all the winners

Ben, find a military modeling club near you.
you will learn loads from them.

and if you want to see painting that shows realy high quality in good lighting conditions then get down to euro mate.
(only problem is, it\'s on the same weekend as gd uk)

Yeah, I noticed some of last years stuff wasn\'t up there...

I was going largely on the pics (wasn\'t there myself) but also on the opinions of a couple of other painters I know who have attended the last few years...

The last year or two, from what I\'ve seen, it\'s pretty much all been up to GD standard... certainly the single miniature stuff, seriously good.

I wasn\'t spcifically trashing anyone\'s entries, just passing opionion on what I\'d seen of the overall standard the last few years... looking forward to seeing it all first hand this year!

I know

I went along to the IPMS show last autum... the tanks and vehicles on show there were just awesome, to some extent a different discipline (certainly a different style) to what we do, but chatting to the historic/vehicle people gave me so many ideas for a 40K tank project I\'m finishing off now....

It\'s a pitty there\'s not more cross-over between the disciplines really :-(

Chris, I have heard a rumour from somewhere that they may change the date for Euro-Militaire this year so it doesn\'t clash, I hope this is so because if it is it means I might get there before I leave the country again

From London either way is an easy drive for you, about an hour to Folkestone and hour and a half two at a push to Birmingham???

I am looking at 3 hours each way down to Folkestone and just over an hour to Birmingham both early starts so it makes it a long weekend

Yeah, pig of a journey from Cardiff to folkestone for you.

If you fancy getting the train Paddington I could pick you up perhaps... I think it\'s something like 2 hours from Cardiff Central to Paddington.

Thanks for the offer but as dates stand at the moment I will be unable to attend either Euro-Militaire or the GD this year

I might go down to Folkestone at teh end of the month for Tracks & Trucks depending on how I feel and I will definately be at Salute providing work doesn\'t change the plans I am making at the moment so I shall probably see you on the 19th April at Salute.

I take it we are meeting for lunch at Costa Coffee again???
