Samurai revisited

I don\'t know if anyone remembers the samurai I started painting awhile back but it got put away into a corner for a bit. Its a 90mm miniature so that has scared me away from it for awhile but I have managed to pluck up enough courage and have started doing some work on it.
So here are the latest shots of the work in progress, I just need a few people to shout words of encouragement from the sidelines .

Lets hope this time I can stick to it because I really love this miniature and would like to get it finished.

Sweet.. Looks like you did alot of research; it paid off. This is hands down, the best painted oriental mini Ive seen.

I\'m not too hot on the horns either. (need to be thinner methinks)

The Kimono(?) if freehand is very impressive.

Its great looks spot on, I like the horns I think they pretty much authentic to how they would of looked (not an expert but went to the British Museum not long back they had some like this there)

looks fantastic. Maybe smooth out the red on the helmet a bit more, but otherwise this part looks done.
Is there a lower half?
(oh, and I assume there is a right hand somewhere)

They are authentic. There\'s an exhibit with the self same horns in the Royal Armories at Leeds.

Thanks all.
The Samurai is mounted on a horse if anyone was wondering, the horse is huge and its going to take some courage to start working on that but I think i\'ll concentrate on the rider for now.
I have\'nt got around to doing much work on this one but as soon as I get more done i\'ll post some more pictures. I\'m currently painting up a smaller samurai in near enough the same colours, so that should give me a good idea what he would look like.
The horns are big but its more of a status thing, probaly would\'nt be to practical charging into battle with those things on your head. If you have seen the Last Samurai movie you may recall that the one Samurai had some pretty big horns on his helmet.

I know of one Samurai called Kato Kiyomasa who had a large kabuto (helmet) and this was made by building up on a simple helmet bowl with wood and paper mache.

Well yet to do any more on this one recently, i have started work on a few other things though. I want to put some sort of design on the front of his jacket so I will have to do a bit of research into that, I was thinking of some Kanji like some buddhist.
As for the scale of it here is a picture of the horse.

A buddhist samurai??

That doesn\'t work, surely.

I thought they were shinto.

Oh no, there where lots of buddhist Samurai. Buddhism was a very mainstream religion in the age of the Samurai. Kato Kiyomasa had very strong believes in buddhism and this caused problems in Japans attempted invasion of China because the other main Smaurai Daimyo in that invasion was a Christian and they did\'nt see eye to eye.
Other examples of famous Buddhist samurai are Takeda Harunobu who took on the buddhist name of Shingen (takeda Shingen) when he became a monk in 1551.Uesugi Kenshin also became a buddhist monk.
