Sand dunes display base - wip

Ok, following my thread in painting and converting here\'s my WIP on the \'drifting sand\' desert display base I am trying to build for a vehicle entry for a GD in 2008.

To re-cap... I have searched high and low for any info or pictures of scale sand dunes or desert drifting sand built for scale models... it just seems to be something that no one has ever done.

So... here\'s my first few stabs at trying to make something look like sand dunes.

I\'ll do this in bits for clarity...


This first photo is attempt number one.

The base is a small 75mm X 60mm (approx) piece of 1.5mm styrene sheet with the dunes sculpted on top using white Milliput (epoxy putty). I tried to make the effect of dunes with smaller ripples up them. dunes tend to be convex on the windward side and concave on the down-wind side where they\'ve collapsed. A lot of the photos I found showed that the windward sides were covered with \'ripples\' created by wind.

I scuplted this using the rounded end of a large and a small paintbrush handle.

The finished base was first sprayed with \'Photo-mount\' spray adhesive and then dipped in a fine mortar mix I had got from a modelling company for making mud.

The excess was blown off then the whole thing was sprayed with skull white undercoat. It was then airbrushed with shades of yellow and beige and finally drybrushed with a light white/yellow mix.

Suffice to say I was NOT happy with the effect. The sculpt looked wrong, the texture looked like set plaster rather than drifting sand and the drybrushing was a bad idea.

You\'ll need to upload your photos to a hosting site like Photobucket, then put image tags around the photo\'s url in your post.

Like this:

(Except not bold - I had to do that so the text rather than the image would show). There is also a button that lets you do this on the toolbar while you\'re posting.

Hmmm... why did I think that the \'attachment\' function actually let you attach images then? Perhaps it\'s just there to confuse people.

Ah well, will be some time before I can get this WIP done then, don\'t have time to go setting up photo site accounts just to post one teensy image on a forum.

Hmmmm...


well, that last one was a copy and paste of your demo of how to attach... the first with the image URL you supplied (nice fish btw) the second replaced with the URL of my image on Photobox... obviously Photobox is somehow different meaning you can\'t link to images on it.

Jeez, I\'ve been a member of so many forums and have never had to go through so much hassle to post an image!!!

hmmm... here\'s a try with the same image in Photobucket... I have a feeling this won\'t work as the URL is in a different format to the one you posted and appears to be a link to a javascript action, not actually the image itself...

It looks to me you are putting the page the image is displayed on in between the image tags, not the location of the image itself. If you right click the image and select properties you can find the location of the image, and use that in between the image tags. It should end in .jpg

I\'m interested to see what you\'ve done... I\'m constantly painting and converting things for my cousins tomb kings so this could be helpful.

OMFG it actually worked.... ok, seems you have to manually edit the URL to take the \'view=current\' Javascript code out of it for it to work... what a goddamn palava!!!!

Ok, 26 posts later...

I\'m gonna start this thread again.

I was able to see this one only after I right click and \"view image\". The problem was that it was linked to the photobucket page, not the image.

So, what I do, when I\'ve got the picture page up, I right click, view image, then copy that url. Like this:

Oh, If you\'re on photobucket you can just copy paste the row under the image labelled \"IMG Code\" it includes the image tags and everything, you shouldn\'t have to do anything other than copy paste, it should would out perfectly.

Yes, I could use edit I guess :)

As stated however on the new thread... I don\'t think it\'d hurt to put an explanation of the (irrationally complex) procedure required to post pics to the forum somewhere in the FAQ to avoid anyone else having to go through the above hassle.

You can use the \"Preview Post\" button to preview your post (Who would think?) before you commit to posting it, that way you can make sure your images are showing up before you post it.

There is also a search function. Plus the little button with a little picture on it above the text box when writing your post. :rolleyes:

Not that I want to prolong this dead thread longer than necessary... but I did spend some time searching the forums under \'images\', \'posting images\', \'can\'t post images\' etc and found no relevant posts.

All I suggested was that perhaps, as fun as it is to have these little esoteric quirks in forums that keep the regulars apart from the newbs and give everyone the fun of threads like this... it\'d be more sensible to have an explanation of the process for attaching photos in the FAQ than people having to rely on the (thankfully) helpful regulars or having to search for posts from the last hapless newb who couldn\'t work it out.


Anyway, thanks to those who did indeed offer help.... and now back to painting minis... hopefully :)
