Hey there, i\'ve been painting minis for years, but i want to start putting some pics up. Problem is, i\'ve only got a scanner to use, not a cam. Anyone got any ideas, past experiences, etc I could put to good use?
Cheers guys and gals

I usually only put a white tupperware box on top of the model to increase the light...

But no matter how good your mini is, nothing can beat a real digital picture of a (well lit) model.

You can see the difference between the two in my gallery... the olders pics have been made with my scanner, the newest with my best friend\'s digital camera...

Just to add what ZaPhOd said in his article. I\'ve also noticed that scanning mini\'s does NOT work with every flatbed scanner. I have a personal one at home that can not take pics from 3d objects. For some reason, it will only focus on anything that touches the glass. Anything else will just get black/blurred out.

While when I use a scanner at work, it picks up 3d objects just fine.
I can\'t explain why certain scanners focus better than others. Both scanners I\'ve used were cheap (under $100). And I\'m not sure if a scanner is a kind of thing were you can tamper and adjust it\'s focus.
I thought I\'d just share with ya.

Scanning

I use Glynn\'s article on scanning, when not fighting with my digi-cam. Great article by the way, very helpful. I use a small white box, business card box to be specific, then I cover the box with a white towel to prevent any extra light from excaping.

Whatever you do, just DON\'T put a cotton filled box over your mini! Man was that one of the biggest mistakes I ever made when trying to get a pic of my minis!

If you have a regular 35mm camera you can have the negatives scanned onto a CD or floppy disk at many photo labs. I would definitely recommend you have a camera that can take good close ups as well.

Piccies

There is a real simple answer to this dilemma that keeps cropping up.
Get your ordinary, bog standard camera, stick a cheap film in it and experiment with taking a good photo of your mini. Get the film developed at the cheapest outfit you can find and pick the best photo. (it is advisable to take notes when snapping so that you can recreate the optimum conditions). Scan said photo into your computer and carry out any manipulations that might be necessary.
In the UK you can get films processed very cheaply and the quality is easily as good as anything low-end digitals can produce. Voila! If you have taken care you will have spent virtually nothing, will have gained a priceless amount of experience and will have a photo worth posting.
