Most definitely - and they also cherry pick the years or other time periods they want to report. Both sides. And they also fail to take into account any other outside factors depending on the outcome they want.
I saw some interesting studies done on crime rates based on the courts. As the courts were more lenient on crimes, crime rates went up. Conversely, as the courts were more strict (Florida\'s law that 80% of time must be served for example) caused crime rates to go down.
Honestly, that is not the only factor. Unemployment rates, the economy as a whole, education, opportunities and many other things affect the crime rates.
As to how to stop a nut from waltzing into a school and slaughtering children, I am not really sure we can unless we turn the schools into a prison and put them into bullet-resistant buses at the end of the day.
This last sick coward shot a bunch of Amish girls in a small schoolhouse. He knew they would put up very little resistance (if any). He really expected to have more time to do much more despicable things to them for some perceived wrong in his childhood. Had he not had a pistol, would he have done this with a machete? I don\'t know, nor does anyone else.
@Dr. E, several countries other than Japan have banned guns. Currently, they are banned in the UK where gun crime is on the rise. Australia recently banned several classes of guns (I am not sure, but I do not believe it was a complete ban?). Canada has almost completely banned pistols.
@Petey, you have called me stupid twice now. Please back that statement up with some facts or at least an interesting argument. I have been called lots of things other than that and some of them deservedly.
I\'ve grown up around guns. Hunted since I was 5. Still do, just not as often as I\'d like. Nobody in my family ever \'went off\' and shot up anything or anyone. When I was in high school, I DID have a gun rack in my pickup truck and a shotgun & rifle hung in there all the time. Practiced or went hunting nearly every day. The only things I\'ve every hunted without eating was the rats at the dump and the crows in my Uncle\'s field and the rare skunk that got too close to the house or chicken coop.
