Good question on the themes of the furture , Utopian, Continuous or Distopian.
Personally I think that the Continuous pattern (there\'s another word I\'m trying to think of) will continue without a serious external influence on humankinds understanding of itself. (First Contact, anyone?{not the Movie})
The Utopian concept is so appealing but I know that we as a species are too damn obstinate to every willing drift into it.

I would love to see the utopian/star trek model come to light, but I suspect that the Heinlein future is more our destiny.

BTW if one\'s only experience with Heinlein is the movie Starship Troopers, do yourself a favor and pick up the book. You wouldn\'t believe it was written in the 50s.
How can you say that in the Heinlein style future, there is no great leap in social function? What was Starship Troopers other than a means of pushing a military style oligarchy (not my words by the way).
Where was the Japanese Anime future? Where mankind will create it\'s own downfall but the woman will be thin, athletic, and not wearing many clothes. And there will be really cool bikes and the police of the future will be numerous but completely inept.

I\'d say a combo of Heinlein and a more realistic cyberpunk world (no requirment of ripped jeans, leather jackets, and bad punk haircuts)

A response to the statement that the average grunt will never be needed again. I\'ve read ST multiple times through the years, and never really understood where people were getting the whole \"he\'s pushing politics on us\" bit from - the requirement is that you show a willingness to sacrifice all before you can go into politics by joining the military - not that you be in the military to run things. And sometimes looking at the way things are being run here in the States, I don\'t think that that is a bad idea.

I can see us in a Dune/Snow Crash era where some tech breakthrough monopolizes us as consumers.
In Dune, it was the spice that basically ruled. If you controlled the spice, you had the power - everyone else was just a consumer.
Don\'t see us in a Star Trek Utopia. Too many social problems all going back to communism/socialism.
Heinlein’s views are very probable IMO. We make incremental steps in society and technology, but are basically the same. (Starship Troopers aside)

I can\'t remember where the part in the book is, but certainly it was brought across into the movie (suprising part there) in the classroom at the beginning and during the shower scene. In the classroom, the teacher asks what is the difference between a citizen and some-other-type-of-person. A citizen is a person who stands up for what they believe in (or the other way around...i can\'t remember). In the shower, someone says they want a family, which is why they joined the Mobile Infantry. It is easier to become a citizen and get a birth license if you have served in the military.
This is what i believe is the objection to his work. Unless you serve in the army, you are a second class citizen with restricted rights.

Yeah, the bit about the birth lottery was brought in from another work of his - to increase the facist feeling of ST - if I remember correctly - cause I don\'t remember there being that population restriction in place in ST - I do remember it in a couple of his other works - and primarily it was a zero population growth type restriction, not a no babies at all type restriction in his worlds.
Edit - Yeah, I know it was brought in from another work, because in the novel, Johnny Rico is the first generation in his family to go into the military.
