science fact vs science fiction

this thread has raised a few good points. how do your like your minis? i personally like them to look realistic (i know this sounds silly if he\'s wearing power armour, carrying a melta and fighting an ork!). i feel that they look better if you feel that the world they inhabit could exist in our universe. ok, there\'s always the random \'it\'s magic\' factor which can allow some of the more crazy things to make sense. i prefer my dragons to look as though they could fly, my ogres to have muscle structure that could function and power armour to look as if there is actually someone inside it. (of course if the mini looks REALLY cool, i can always add a pinch of salt...) but that just me, what do you guys think? does anything go (as it were)?

I agree with your own summary. We need some scientific/physical factors which will always maintain some sort of connection with our own world, such as, like you said, muscle structure.

But it only goes so far. With things like Orks, it\'s pretty much however the manufacturer wants them to look; and it\'s up to you how you paint them. But there are still rules that they have to stick to.

I personally like realism in my painting too, for example using the right kind of weathering on the right kind of metal, and for big 40K weapons like power claws, I\'ll add power feeds and cables to make it work.

Pretty much anything goes, but there are still certain things that simply can\'t be changed; most notably, lighting. Light behaves the same way no matter what world they inhabit.

I do prefer them to be realistic-looking, no matter what the color scheme or theme may be. A recent (and excellent) example is Darkstar\'s Thandis the Bonecaller. It\'s not a great sculpt (IMO) and the skellies are chrome, but the lighting makes it seem realistic.

The only limit should be the painter\'s imagination as long as certain rules of physics are followed. Does that make any sense?

What we consider realistic may be changing.
Bionic Weaponry

Others include super gloves that would give the user the strength of a \"bionic man\"

Yeah, Baby, I always wanted a Power Fist.

maybe so, but I still don\'t think we will ever make swords that are 7 feet tall and 8 inches across.

Uber big guns bother me some too, but only when held pistol-like. Even if you cut the weight by calling it some futuristic resin or plastic, the bulk would make it difficult to wield and aim.

i have to say that swords are where my standards lapse. i do like big weapons (i wonder what freud would have to say about that. cock probably). not the really stupidly big ones but unrealistic one nevertheless

Well as a notorious space marine painter I should not bother too much about realism, but I actually prefer minis with a certain inner logic; space marines are over-strong and over-bulkey so they should have suitable weapons; a simple human would do better with a more realistically sized gun. about long words - well is has to do with the fact that in the small scale we have in most minis you juat have to emphasise the most interesting parts of the mini (gun, face, etc) to make them stand out regardless of the paintjob.
By the way - a big sword:

Just my opinion.

I like it when fire is painted upsidedown.

Actually...I tend to paint what I would consider
\'realistically\'...lots of dark drab colors. But I don\'t have hard and fast rules about what is
real or not.

Mini wise, I think just about anything goes, I know when things look \'fakey\' but its not a quantifiable measurement.

Part of it I think anyway is how far you are willing to suspend your disbelief -

Magic - No problem.

8 Foot tall power armor - No problem

8 Foot tall power armor covered in 400 lbs of swinging crap - back banners, capes, icons, half of your dead enemy, etc - Major problem

But then again I also have an issue with Weapons of Unusual Strenghth and Size - Especially a 8 foot sword being used by a size zero Fianna.

So call me on the side of semi realism in my fantasy, thank you very much

i dont mind the big stuff (as i have mentioned) but only if there is someone big carrying it. i can only push my s.o.d. so far

Space marines carrying BFG\'s or BFB\'s, back banners and the such is acceptable to me.
After all, the fluff describes them as 7-8 foot tall genetic monstrocities, with strengthed skeletal structures and about 50% more muscle mass, coupled with power armour which multiplies their already enourmous strength.
A space marine can probably lift a small car over his head, I doubt an 8 foot sword is much of a problem.
