Scotland -- travellers\' advise needed

Hi everyone,

here\'s the thing: my husband and me are planning to spend a few days in scotland during our next visit to UK (around GD time, of course :) ). So I was thinking, perhaps any of you travellers could recommend where to go and what to see? I\'m torn between Edinburg and Glasgow, but then again, there are so many beautiful places like Inverness, that I\'m simply lost. Please help me out here, if you can! :)

OH OH OH!

Margo, I met my wife in Scotland, and we did a tour.
I never got to Edinburgh, but in the course of a week, we swing about much of the coastline type things.
Oban, the Mull of Kintyre (apologies if I\'m spelling it wrong).

If you want, I can email you my old livejournal descriptions of the places, though you\'ll have to also endure a lot of \'oh gushy-gushy-new-love\' yammering about the wife, too.
And I still have to get the pictures from that trip developed... isn\'t that sad? It was 4 years ago, now...

Of course, actual Scotland residents can probably tell you a lot more of what\'s interesting.

I\'ll get those years-old pics developed tomorrow, and post some of them in this thread, too.
Scotland\'s a beautiful place to behold, and I\'m pretty sure at least some of the pictures turned out well...
Assuming the film has survived all this time to be developed.

Edinburgh and Glasgow are great cities and you\'ll enjoy both of them. I personally love Dumfrieshire and Galloway down in the bottom \'chin\' bit. It\'s stunningly beautiful. But then again, so is most of Scotland.

Shame about the weather...

But watch out for the midges and the stereotypical Scots (bound to be a few knocking around with their \'hoots man\' and all that tourist malarkey). Nothing worse than stereotypes! Glasgow is the rough and ready view of Scots - more excitement and life perhaps. It\'s only a short hop between the two big cities mind.

Midges are small flies like mozzies.

The Problem with Scotland...

...is that it\'s filled with Scots...

lollollol

Just kidding, I think Edward Longshanks said that in BraveHeart.

Scotland would be a great place to visit...I\'m envious!!

I\'m jealous Margo!!!

Grumb and I have wanted to go to Scotland for a couple of years now and just haven\'t had the chance.

We\'ve got some friends (an ex-co-worker of Grumb\'s and her husband actually) that own a hotel and pub in Scotland (Chirnside, Berwickshire). It\'s in the very southern part of Scotland, just over the Brit line. I\'m sure if you needed a place to stop they\'d treat you right! The website is www.waterlooarms.com and their names are Sheila Bingaman and Charles Perkins.

Also, one of my good friends and neighbors is Scottish. I\'ll ask her some good places to see and e-mail you.

Have a great time!!

Margo - if you can, it\'s worth going to one of the Islands - Skye or Mull (Mull has a great castle) are excellent; varied scenery, short ferry crossing (or bridge now with Skye).
Also, try to visit a distillery while you\'re there; my girlfriends family are from Dufftown (look it up) which has 7 stills in the town; just sit in a pub and try all the different single malts (over several evenings I might add!)

Well I say Skye is great - I spent 7 weeks there during my degree over a summer; worst weather on record! horizontal rain. And when the rain stopped - midges:flame:

Mind you, the golden eagles looked nice

Thanks a lot everybody for advise!
I\'ve done some research about the places you\'ve mentioned, and now I think going to just one place won\'t be enouh! My husband agrees, so we\'ll probably be taking a bus tour to see as many places as possible. Do any of you know by any chance if there are companies that organize such tours straight from London? (that\'s where we\'ll be staying in UK)

Once again, thanks for advise!

Wow! I\'m jealous! Have fun Margo! I\'ll check if we have any transplants from Scotland over at the pub the next time I\'m there. I have my doubts, but it couldn\'t hurt.

Now if you wanted to go to Ireland, there\'s a bunch of folks I know from there. :)

Edinburgh is the nicest big city I’ve ever been to. You don’t need to make any real plans if you are visiting, just take a wander and keep your eyes peeled. You can’t turn a corner without spotting a beautiful bit of architecture, a weird little shop, some quirky locals or many other cool things.

The nightlife is wicked too. If clubbing is your thing the Honeycomb is well worth checking out – it’s all based in the vaults under Edinburgh and is worth visiting for the setting alone, but they also run some fine nights. Being a Drum & Bass fan I’d definitely recommend a night called Manga if it’s on during your visit and you are into D&B. You can check out the club\'s website here. Just don’t get too wasted and miss out on exploring the city!

I love Scotland. I have thought of moving there sometime in my life as the nature look like it\'s fetched from a fantasy novel.

Edinburgh is a very nice city. I visited New Lanark as wellhttp://www.newlanark.org/ The nature is absolutely amazing around there. We rocked the local pub there! Another amazingly beautiful place to visit is were the highlands meet the lowlands.

Strange, I couldn\'t wait to get out of Scotland........ lol lol lol

Nah not really, If you what \"touristy\" Edinburgh is your city, Lots of beutiful architecture, Men in Kilts, Whisky & Gift shops (including a whisky museum) and great Tattooists ( where I get mine done;) )

If you like Shopping then Glasgow is your City, LOTS of shops, with lots of designer labels, thought there is more affordable stuff there and its fun just looking.

pituresque stuff has to be the Highlands and Islands, there is a nice drive up through the highlands to inverness via loch ness. If you can get to the West coast, there are lovely boat rides, veiws lots of wildlife etc.

There is also St Andrews, small but very pretty, nice castle, Veiws, LOTS of golf coarse\'s and my old school :)

I\'ve got pics of the last few times I\'ve been up there with my better half (she loves the place) if you want to have a look ?

I can tell you that you will enjoy it no matter where you get a chance to visit, and you will want to go back :D

I have the best deal, I get free accomadation at my parents!!!

Thanks a LOT once again!!!
I\'ll do some more reasearch tomorrow morning, it\'s 1.30 in the morning here and I\'m yawning :))
Jambot13, I do enjoy D&B quite a lot, and absolutely love clubbing! So if it\'s Edinburg, I\'ll keep in mind. As for shopping, I normally get my dose in London :)
Alright, off to sleep ... *yawn*
