Scott\'s Avatars of War Goblin Hero

This was a small, fun fig to paint. Really enjoyed it. Positives....
-I think my metal improved (slightly). Feel free to LMK if you think there still a little junky!
-I experimented with purple in the skin tone, both in the basecoat and in a couple successive washes through the process. I like it, and I think I\'ll make it standard practice from now on. Please leave any comments and crits, no matter how harsh you feel they may sound. This model is a MASSIVE step up from one year ago today and it\'s only from the crit\'s and tips of members of this board so please speak up.

looking good man! Don\'t worry about what others think, if you have fun then why bother worrying?

I do like how it came out though! I just think that you might want to spend more time and probably read some articles and look at how other people paint goblins/orcs. Overall, I\'d say just work on smoothness and try to get the flesh of the goblin to really stand out as that\'s the focus of the miniature. the metallics look good and a good step forward but again, smoothness lets it down. The two bushes on the base in front obscure the miniature a little bit. try not to do that in the future or make the bushes small as it takes attention off the miniature and hides parts of the miniature. I hope all that helped!

looking good scott i think all can say is wat mathew has said thin your paints right down and you will be amazed how smooth the finished mini will look :)

I paint my thumb.
Man you\'re fast!
I barely have time to prep my next while you got this one finished. But the end result does look a bit rushed and messy (Which does suit the character...)
I like the colors you used for the skin, could use a little more \'pop\' but I dunno what exactly, shading is a bit stark on it. Metallics aren\'t so bad but still a bit rough, chainmail could go through the same process as the rest though, with shading and highlights depending on where it is, more variation in tone.
These two articles, http://coolminiornot.com/article/aid/649
http://coolminiornot.com/article/aid/232
are very helpful, you should read them if not already done. On this kind of models especially, metal deserve extra attention.
Just being as critical as I can, but I think you could have done better on this one, with more time and attention to details.
It\'s nice, but it could be nicer, keep it up.

Thanks guys!

Matthew- I\'m not hung up on opinion of my skills around here (though I think I can guess that I WON\'T be winning a slayer sword soon!) but I do treasure the information people sucxh as yourself have given me. It\'s great to get honest and constructive advice

-Starchaser & MatthewBaird- Allright, looks like I\'ve been busted on the paint thicknes. I have been using paint dilluted to maybe 3:1 Paint to water. It\'s a big step from stright outta the jar but I could thin it down more. 1:1 might help the transitions you speak off. It\'s just hard to sacrifice speed! This model took about 3hrs work from opening in the pack to finished (not in one sitting though) and that\'s about 3 times as long as I used to spend. So much to do!

GreenOne- Thanks again for taking the time. I\'ve read the articles but it\'s been tough undoing the old habits in favor of the new (to me!) approach and my results are mixed. I will work those techniques into my next fig with metal. I got the AoW Orc ready to go, as well as 3000 points of dwarfs I want done by march so I got just the stuff.

As for the bushes. They\'re pre-made from Silfor and they\'re only about 4mm tall. I wanted to base the guy consistently with the rest of my army and they\'re not that bad from the eagle\'s eye view of the table, but I do see how restricting they are for these pics.

I\'m always up for trying new Orc skin types. This one was in fact new to me as it used quite a bit of purple in the skin tone. Please anyone feel free to share your recipe and I\'ll give it a shot.

Still gotta try out the gold tech you posted Starchaser. I\'ll try that on a dwarf runesmith I\'ve got on the bench later this week.

The standard isn\'t that high afraid. I look forward to the challenge and getting that model. And you still have me at a disadvantage because I haven\'t seen your work yet. Get painting and put something up!

I paint my thumb.
3hrs ???
I can barely set up my workspace in 3hrs lol

Thing is, that\'s not just some generic from an army box here, it\'s an very fine sculpt and quite expansive on it\'s own, so why so hasty ?
This mini deserves more of your time !

GreenOne- True, too true that some of these models, esp. the Panigua sculpts are fantastic and a man could easily spend 10-30hrs working the model to the fullest. My obstacles are that I have next to no time for the hobby currently. I do 99% of my posts from work, \'cause we\'re slow until the end of this week, but once home I got a 4yr old and a 1yr old who eat my time. After we subdue them into sleep it\'s often a case of only getting 1/2hr to an hr free time, spend some of that with the old lady and the end result is not much. So..... I work as fast as possible. I\'d happily spend more time on the models but as a gamer/painter I feel obliged to keep pounding out stuff to play with. I\'m often getting up early in the moring to paint. 4am to 5am have been good times, but that means I typically got to cut my sleep down to 4 hrs or so on those day. But some times it has to happen, I gotta paint!

That doesn\'t mean I don\'t want to spend more time painting. I ordered some models (that should frickin\' be here by now!) that I CAN\'T use in my armies so I will make the time to do those models justice. The model young Hestan and myself have selected for our other challenge will also take more than a couple hours to pound out.

The best results take time, that\'s a fact, so most of my efforts here have been sort of the \"poor man\'s\" hybrid efforts of trying to get decent results quickly. Much to the aggravation of those who\'ve given me adivce I\'m sure.

I take EVERYTHING from these boards in and try to learn every technique and try it at least once on a model. For this model it was using purple in the skin tone that was really new to me, and I liked it!

My chief challenges are things that seem to not take extra time per model, but more practice. Placing highlights on metal and using a light source theory for placing highlights for example shouldn\'t take any longer then doing the same thing, only incorrectly. Ah well, onward and upward!

Pat.... Pashye... Patents? I don\'t understand that word you used. What is this p-a-t-i-e-n-c-e word anyway? If I say it 5 times in a mirror will a demon come and paint all my models for me? I might give that a try!
