Scott vs. a Paying Customer!

Hey, I wanted to put this up special. I\'m not blowing my own horn here, but when I came to CMON last july-ish I was not thinning paints, drybrushing everysingle thing and not showing any improvement in about 8 years. I\'ve had a lot of fun, and some frustration since then but I\'ve improved enough from all your great advice, tips, and encouragement that I actually have some commission work lined up! Now, I am not pretending that this means I have \"made it\" or anything like that, I\'m defo still a learner but and I\'ve a long way to go before I place my models with confidence next to some of yours, but a great thanks to everyone for the help.

Anyway, this is the very first painting commission I\'ve ever done. It was about 8hrs 15min from blister pack to these pics. I tracked it close so I could keep an eye on what my future rates should be. Here it is.....

This was a hard model to photograph, and the only thing I can say is that it looks less chalky IRL, but other then that it is as advertised. Please give me any crit\'s you\'ve got. If I\'m gonna be high on myself enough to charge people, I gotta be able to hear the harsh stuff. Fire away!

Second photo, the back/shoulder muscle... IS THAT A MOLD LINE?!?! OMG OMG OMG

Okay, hopefully you didn\'t put your fist through the monitor with that bit of ribbin\'.

Two things that jump out at me that I like. First, the crystals are nicely done for such a small size, and second I really liked the spiky grass. However, that leads into a ponderance.

If this is a winter troll, why is the grass green/vibrant? Just early in the season maybe? Even just a little patch of snow or something around on the base might help it. But, not sure if this is your doing or instructions from the customer. And they\'re always right, even when they\'re wrong. Horribly, horribly, horribly wrong... oh sorry, slipped into a work rant there for a bit.

But over all, I like it.

Congratulations on your first commission. Nice Work.

As to the figure in these Larger size photo\'s it\'s easier to see the issues you think nothing off in \"Real Life\". It looks as if you have might have had a similar issue with your primer as I have recently had in that there appears to be a bit of \'Granulation\' in some of the insets of the muscles.
After talking to some of the people down at Salute I\'m gradually coming to the opinion that Airbrushing a prime coat is more sympathetic and condusive to smoother finishes.

I\'ve also recently got my first commission project. Got until mid may to finish it all....*sigh*

Also preparing a couple of armies for ebay sales.

If you decide to do it more seriously, you may want to consider a small personal website as well to showcase more works.

I\'m hoping to have mine up in a month or so.

Congrats. You\'ve improved more in a year then I have in 25! The one improvment I would make on this guy is some darker near black tones on the hair. Especially where it contacts the skin, right now they blend together somewhat.

Mike-Before I blame any primer issues if you see graininess it\'s likely I put it there. But what would you use for an Airbrushed primer? I want something durable for the tabletop but I am willing to try something new!

StarFyre- Yeah I am gonna get a website. Mostly for blabbing on about figs and stuff. EldinTux is working on it now! We\'ll have to link up my Canadian Brotha!

Thanks again guys. But man! This fig does actually look pretty rough now that I look at the pics. Yeesh! For a first commission I was hoping it might turn out better. Hope the customer is happy! Ever onwards....

Getting a commission is very cool. Having it turn out well is really good.
Personally I don\'t like the hair colour - it\'s too pale, a fiery orange would have been ace.
There seems to be some stains in the hair on top, not sure what this is from.

I hate grainy primer - I need to learn to use an airbrush, but I\'ve found keeping my workstation cleaner makes a real difference in reducing the amount of crap that ends up stuck to my minis (usually rabbit hair!).

He looks cool, your customer is happy - success!
Your improvement is down to hard work and painting non-stop, I\'m not sure you actually have a job...
I\'m sure we\'ll go head to head on WAMP sometime, but I\'m not in a rush to face you yet...(need to practice more first )

I\'m going to be trying several colours as I used a Bleached bone on my Salute entries and was happy with the result. I know Chris (GPolaxe) has used a Dark Sand as a airbrush base coat/primer and I suspect that Alan Curaso has used a white.
I\'ll be experimenting in the next few weeks so I\'ll be letting people know.

How about durability on the table? This was primered grey then Airbrushed with the blue....

BTW I looked at the pics this morning and after some clarity, it doesn\'t look that good TBH. Thanks for the kind words all but the pic reall looks GHASTLY....

Anyway since the stuff I\'m doing is going for gaming wouldn\'t they just chip and flake off without a proper primer? Even if sealed?
