Angry, Angry, Angry. It just doesn\'t seem fair. i spend ages on a mini, and then when i put it on here it gets like 4 at most. can anyone give me a hand? i\'m really starting to get angry, and its annoying. :cussing:

it seems like youve posted quite a few wips - incomplete bases and unpainted (or unhilighted/shaded) areas will bring your score down a lot. as for time, how much do you spend? its easy for me to spend 20hrs on a 6+ rated mini.
make sure you hilight up and shade down at least 3 shades in each direction. go slow, and use many small washes instead of one large one; they are much more controlled and produce smooth gradients and reduce the watermarking. good luck and keep posting
Id have to agree. I looked at a few of your minis and they seem incomplete in 1 or 2 areas. Not finishing the base will knock your score by up to 1 point and at most some of you minis would be a 6. Thats not to say there is anything wrong with you painting. I fully sculpted a bear for my Ice queen and I thought the painting was decent and didnt break a 6 for it.
If you are painting for score you will be disappointed every time. If you want comments to help you improve then pimp your mini in the \"Discuss submission\" section of the forum and you will get a plethora of advice. Dont dispare just keep painting. After all its a hobby thats ment to be fun so have fun and dont sweat the score.

I agree with the others about your minis not looking finished. Basing is important - its more than just \"framing the picture\", its part of the art itself. Even a simple base (sand washed in brown ink and overbrushed in lighter browns) will make a big difference. You seem to have a good painting foundation to build on - your colour choices are good and your selection of minis is interesting too. I think the usual tips apply to you though:-
1. Thinned paints - you need to experiment a little with thinner paints. This will make your painting look much smoother but will take time to get right.
2. Highlighting/shading - try using some washes for shading and thinner paints (as above) for your highlighting. The Bonesinger mini shows you understand highlighting but I think you can make it smoother.
3. Basing (already mentioned)
4. Use the WiP forum to get feedback as you\'re painting - it helps you understand what others see when they look at your mini.
5. Don\'t get stressed by low scores here - they are a fact of life. Look around at some of the \"competition\" on the site - it\'s tough! Also, voting cales vary between individuals, moods, weather etc so focus on painting for you and not the scores.
Most important of all, stick with it. The only way to improve is to keep painting. Read the articles on CMON, ask questions in the painting forum (maybe search first to see if they\'ve already been covered though ) nd post WiPs.

I have to agree with all the above comments.
Your bases are incomplete which may be fine for Gaming but if you are looking to achieve high scores then they need to have some form of varation from the Standard Black GW Slotta base.
Your painting does need additional work, as suggested more layers of thinner paint to give greater distinction in the highlights. I looked at your Bonesinger and to be honest the level of highlights that you have done seems to be only one layer which realy isn\'t a great deal.
Things you need to look at;
Brush Control,
Thinning (diluting ) paints,
Increased range of highlights to shadows,
Making the bases look completed,
Colour Balancing. (This is the most complex thing to think about and you\'ll need to study about Colour Theory. (Look in the Articles section there\'s a great article in there. ))
Post items in the Works In Progress Forum for more directly assiting comments on pieces you are working on. You\'ll get a lot of helpful comments in there.

Before my sabbatical, I was fairly well known for what was called the \"Cut and Paste\". It was a list of items that, when people were becoming frustrated with their rank or the voting on one of their minis, I\'d bring out to put a little clarity on the situation.
From the looks of it, things havent changed much from when I was here last. Perhaps a little more harsh, but considering the level of competition that is to be expected.

I\'ve (had) been coming here almost every day since July, 2002 to vote and to get ideas on how to paint. I have since found out a few things about this place which are universal.
- At least once a month, someone will complain about the voting system and how \"fair\" it actually is. I myself have started a few of these, the last being around December 2002 on my scarecrow. :innocent:
- (new line)Whether you like it or not, your mini is being compared to minis painted by \"professionals\" and whether or not it could win a painting national competition. (Is it Golden Demon Worthy?) This rank is NOT on how much you have improved. The next time you feel your mini is being unfairly ranked, try stopping by the unofficial Golden Demon website or look at the top 10 list here on CMON and give yourself an honest appraisal of your work compared to what you see there.
- Your mini, is being rated on not just the paint job, but also on the sculpt, manufacturer, basing, style, importance in game play, age, the photography, how well the photo is edited and cleaned up in the editor, the description, etc. Its the complete package your getting voted on.
- Minis will be voted on by manufacturer by multiple people of the fanboy mentality. (ex. GW fanboys vote on GW minis exclusively or will skew them higher than minis from another manufacturer... Same for the Rackham fans , Reaper, etc.) :|~
- DO NOT SUBMIT YOUR MINI if you have thin skin and cannot live without at least one of your favorite minis being a 5. It WILL happen. (Even Haley has a 5.8) :~(
- Your mini, no matter well photographed, ALWAYS looks better in real life.
- There are a few painters here who have a reputation for being great and that skews their votes higher than most.. sometimes it\'s even warranted. Try not to dwell on that fact.
AND MOST IMPORTANT
The only person you can control is yourself. Do what you think is right and the rest will work itself out.
- The actual vote on your mini means absolutely squat. Someone could give your mini a 5 and the same pic 3 months later a 7. It\'s all relative.
Ohh, and quit taking this site so seriously.. it\'ll save you some ulcers... lol

I agree with what most of the others have already said, nothings fiunished.. How can it warrent a good score. I for one wont even vote on a WIP submission and I think CMON is full of too many of them already in the galleries and they all need to go in my opinion.
If you have a WIP post it in the Works in Progress thread where people can really comment on it and give you comments and critism. Thats how your going to make the most progress with your painting.
So please don\'t get upset about low scores on unfinished miniatures.
