sculpt it or paint it?

I am doing something for the upcoming \"GW Gaming Day\" in Austria and was thinking about the following:

I\'ll do a banner with daemonic faces coming out of it, the problem is - should i paint them on or should I sculpt them? I am tending to sculpting, because it looks more \"realistically\" (lol, yeah - daemonic faces on a fantasy mini...) but what do you think will be more impressive...? or what is considered to take more skill?

not doing a fancy bright paintjob here so I need to catch their eye in another way :)

I\'d say sculpt it! Just be careful you don\'t make it too bulky, it still needs to look like a reasonably flat banner. At least in most places... But, I think you\'ll get more \'wow\' factor if you sculpt it.

sculpting seems the way to go if you can pull it off, but on the other hand, from personal experience, I managed to pull of my biggest \"\"wow factor\" when, trying to avoid a sculpt job I didn\'t think I could pull off, I instead undertook a involved freehand. So I really think it could go either way! Ultimately I think follow the idea that most inspires you to do your best work, either way can be amazing. :)

already sculpted the first of the faces (quiet work-weekends are nice...) and i feel satisfied with it :)

think you are right, that\'s what counts

well, i must admit to being in a similar quandary Trovarion. Finished an Ork Warlord in mega armour, and about to start on dual banners for him - but can\'t decide whether to sculpt the banners or just paint them.
I think both would look good if done right, but I am leaning towards sculpting, because it would lend more \'weight\' to the model.
It\'s a bit scary too, as I am only accustomed to painting flat banners and (whilst somewhat experienced with general sculpting of models) have never tried sculpting banners.
Maybe you should do both and see which one ends up looking better - the sculpted, or the painted one.
You can always use the other one on a different model :)

@Wereweevil: I think with an ork banner you can both sculpt and paint it at the same time, so have something like a large central character/glyph in relief but with the details painted is like it has been stitched over the background which would have all of the checks and dags usually associated with orks.

*gulp* I feel like I\'m hijacking this thread now :(
But... Avicenna, thanks, that\'s not a bad suggestion. The only thing is, one of the banners is suppsed to look like the base the model is on - which is the Evil Sunz Forgeworld symbol. I have tilted it forward and raised it on a \'stone dais\' type thing, so I wanted one of the banners to be a mini version of the base. I think I\'d only be able to pull that off if I sculpted the actual banner *and* painted the detail on. So I guess you\'re right
For the other one, I am sure your idea would work, with the stitching, glyphs and all.
But it still begs the question - Sculpt or paint? Maybe it all depends on the model itself.
For example, I don;t think that a sculpted banner would look good on an eldar, or high elf, it would just seem too \'chunky\', regardless of the delicateness of the sculpting?

Have you seen the movie Constatine? Cause in the beginning you see a daemon trying to crawl out a broken mirror. maybe you could use that for inspiration(I\'ll try to find a pic.)

Edit:
This is a picture of the daemon before the glass breaks, but i could give some inspiration....

This is probably no help......!

I saw on Ogre on here the other day with a sculpted banner, new GW Ogre, enormous banner(It was at least 6-8 inches, huuuge!)It had the Ogre\'s representation of their god,the great maw or whatever,in a circle of teef and a few horns and skulls and other cool additions around the edges,it\'s very good, and huuuge! Thing is I did a search for it last night and couldn\'t get it,tried Ogre,Ogre with banner/standard/flag.....nothing,maybe someone else knows where it is lol (It is great reference material though,I\'m not just gibbering....hopefully!):D;)
