sculpting abs

It\'s all about pushing putty around. Abs should be a sinch if you\'ve already sculpted the body! Just get the right shapes and right proportions and go from there.

This is a WIP of a now-finished project of mine that I think may be a fair guide for you. Don\'t limit your reference to other sculpts though. Look for artist anatomy drawings and photos of those freaky body builders!

Doesn\'t look right? Tools giving you problems in making the right kinds of marks? Putty not adhering to the surface properly?

I cannot believe that the creafigs mini is 35mm. That is just nuts. How do they get so much detail?
Well it is in Fimo, so they\'ve got as much time as they want to get that detail in! Course real men could do this with MS :D

This kind of thing is really mostly about practice and developing a good eye; you start small and simple and work up from there. It\'s really amazing how far this can take you - stuff I used to find a challenge to do on a 120mm figure I can now do on a 54!

The one on creafigs actually has too many muscles. The \"abs\" are essentially three strips on each side. You have the rectus abdominus, which make up the six pack. To the outside of those you have the external obliques, and just outside of those, you have the ends of the serratus anterior which poke pout underneath the lats. If you\'re going for a super-defined look, the deeply defined portions of the muscles are great places to hide the edges of pieces of putty. My advice is to break the abdominal region up into maneagable sections and focus on one part at a time. A stiffer putty may serve you well here. If you\'re using GS, a blue heavy mix will give you more stiffness (or you can just wait for 30 minutes or so). I don\'t know if any of this helps.

aye very true. although not anatomically correct the example is still helpful for technique. i think he had it best on the 5th pic (with the abs just added) but could do with some serratus added. it doesnt look over muscly like it does at the end

Thes are all very helpfull, i will give it a go when all my new sculpting stuff arrives, its sculpted for a chaos space marines abs, so the overly muscley one will be especially helpfull

i would take one of two approaches to sculpting muscles / six packs:

1) for each muscle add a ball of putty to the torso and blend these together with your sculpting tool, rounding off each muscle

or

2) for the six pack, add a layer of putty to the torso and use a knife to cut defined sections for the muscles. then these can be smoothed and rounded off with the sculpting tool.
